Verify your degree aligns with the role
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree field to directly relate to Design Project Manager duties. A degree in graphic design, architecture, or industrial design typically qualifies. A general business degree alone may trigger an RFE asking you to prove the connection.
Check employer LCA filings before applying
Use Migrate Mate to filter Design Project Manager roles by verified DOL Labor Condition Application history, so you're only targeting employers who have actively sponsored H-1B workers in comparable design and project management positions.
Research prevailing wages for your metro area
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage meeting DOL's prevailing wage for Design Project Managers in your specific location. Run the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating an offer so you know the floor and can spot underpayment before it becomes a filing problem.
Target cap-exempt employers for faster timelines
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with higher education, and certain research institutions are cap-exempt. Design Project Manager roles at these organizations can be filed any time of year, bypassing the April lottery and giving you a faster path to status.
Document your project management credentials specifically
Build a credentials file that ties your portfolio, PMP or other certifications, and past project scopes directly to specialty occupation language. Design PM roles attract RFEs when duties look generalist, so pre-empting that with detailed evidence strengthens the petition.
Time your offer negotiation around the H-1B filing window
H-1B petitions for cap-subject employers must be filed in early April for an October 1 start date. If you get an offer in June, your employer can't file until the following April. Factor this nine-month gap into your transition planning before accepting.
H-1B Visa Design Project Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Design Project Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as graphic design, architecture, interior design, or industrial design. USCIS looks at whether the degree requirement is an industry norm for the role. Generalist project management duties without a design-specific degree requirement can trigger scrutiny, so the job description language matters as much as your own credentials.
What does the H-1B sponsorship process look like for a design employer?
Your employer first files a Labor Condition Application with DOL, certifying that your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for the role in your work location. Once the LCA is certified, they file Form I-129 with USCIS. For cap-subject positions, the petition enters the annual lottery in April. Cap-exempt employers, such as universities or affiliated nonprofits, can file at any point during the year.
How do I find Design Project Manager jobs where employers already sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate filters Design Project Manager listings by verified DOL LCA filing history, showing you employers who have actively sponsored H-1B workers in comparable roles. This lets you focus your applications on companies with an established sponsorship track record rather than asking employers about their willingness to sponsor during the interview process.
Can I use O*NET to support my H-1B specialty occupation claim?
Yes. The O*NET occupation profile for Design Project Managers documents the typical education requirements and core duties associated with the role. Immigration attorneys commonly reference O*NET in I-129 petitions to demonstrate that a bachelor's degree in a specific design field is a standard industry requirement, which supports the specialty occupation classification USCIS requires.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Design Project Manager role changes significantly?
A material change in job duties, title, or work location can require your employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS. If your responsibilities shift from design-focused project management toward general operations management, the amended petition may face additional scrutiny over whether the role still qualifies as a specialty occupation. Employers should file the amendment before the change takes effect.
