H-1B Visa Developer Evangelist Jobs
Developer Evangelist roles sit at the intersection of engineering and communication, which means your H-1B visa petition needs to document both your technical credentials and your public-facing work. Employers filing for this title typically classify it under computer occupations SOC codes, and your degree field must align with that classification for USCIS to approve specialty occupation status.

Align your degree to the SOC code
Developer Evangelist roles are typically filed under computer occupations SOC codes. If your degree is in communications or marketing rather than computer science, document your technical coursework and engineering experience explicitly in your petition to satisfy the specialty occupation requirement.
Build a public technical portfolio before applying
USCIS adjudicators scrutinize Developer Evangelist petitions more than pure engineering roles. Conference talks, published tutorials, open-source contributions, and recorded demos function as evidence that your role requires specialized knowledge, not just presentation skills.
Target employers with dedicated developer relations teams
Companies with established DevRel functions understand the specialty occupation argument for this title. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with active H-1B LCA filing history in computer occupations so you're not educating a hiring manager about sponsorship from scratch.
Verify the prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search before you negotiate so you know the floor, and flag any offer below Level II wages as a potential filing risk.
Request cap-exempt filing if your employer qualifies
Developer Evangelist roles at universities, nonprofit research institutions, or certain government-affiliated entities may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filing, bypassing the annual lottery entirely. Ask your prospective employer's legal team whether the organization meets USCIS cap-exemption criteria before accepting an offer.
Document travel and remote work in your LCA carefully
Developer Evangelists frequently work at conferences, client sites, and co-working spaces outside their primary work location. Each worksite where you'll spend more than 40 hours in a rolling year must be covered by a certified LCA or a short-term placement memo, or you risk a compliance violation.
H-1B Visa Developer Evangelist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Developer Evangelist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but the argument requires documentation. USCIS evaluates whether the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Because Developer Evangelist sits between engineering and advocacy, your employer's petition must demonstrate that the position requires specialized technical knowledge, not just communication skills. A strong job description tied to a computer occupations SOC code and a degree that matches that field strengthens the case significantly.
Which SOC code do employers typically use when filing H-1B petitions for Developer Evangelist roles?
Most employers file Developer Evangelist roles under SOC 15-1299 (Computer Occupations, All Other) or 15-1252 (Software Developers), depending on the technical depth of the position. The SOC code drives both the prevailing wage calculation and the specialty occupation argument. You can review the O*NET occupation profile for these codes to understand what qualifications USCIS expects the role to require.
How does frequent conference travel affect my H-1B compliance as a Developer Evangelist?
H-1B status ties your authorized employment to the worksites listed on your certified LCA. Developer Evangelists who speak at conferences or visit client offices in multiple states must either have those locations covered by a blanket LCA or rely on the short-term placement provision, which allows work at unlisted sites for up to 60 days per year. Your employer's immigration counsel should track your travel calendar to avoid compliance gaps.
How do I find employers who have a track record of sponsoring H-1B visas for Developer Evangelist roles?
Search Migrate Mate to filter employers by their H-1B LCA filing history in computer occupations. Companies that have filed repeatedly in this category already understand the specialty occupation argument for technical advocacy roles, which shortens the petition process and reduces the risk of a Request for Evidence from USCIS.
Can I switch from an H-1B at a software company to a Developer Evangelist role at a different employer without losing my status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. Once your current H-1B petition has been approved and you've been in valid H-1B status, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval. The new role must still qualify as a specialty occupation, so make sure the new employer's SOC code and job description support that classification before the transfer is filed.
