Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Identity Access Management
Align your credentials to SOC codes
IAM roles file under SOC 15-1212 (Information Security Analysts) or 15-1299. Pull your O*NET profile for whichever code your target employer uses and verify your degree field maps to the listed educational requirements before applying.
Target regulated industries with filing history
Financial institutions, health systems, and federal contractors are under constant compliance pressure around identity governance. These sectors sponsor H-1B IAM roles at higher rates than unregulated industries, so prioritize them when building your target employer list.
Search verified sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter IAM job listings by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. This removes the guesswork of cold-applying to companies that haven't sponsored the role before.
Check prevailing wage before your offer
Run your specific SOC code and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before you negotiate. Your employer's LCA must certify wages at or above the DOL prevailing wage for that location, so knowing Level II versus Level III thresholds gives you a realistic anchor.
Document tool-specific experience for the LCA
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation claims for IAM roles. Resumes listing SailPoint, CyberArk, Okta, or Azure AD administration alongside relevant certifications like CISSP or CISM strengthen the employer's position when responding to a Request for Evidence.
Time your cap filing around project onboarding
H-1B cap petitions filed in April take effect October 1. If your employer wants you on a critical IAM implementation before then, ask whether they qualify as a cap-exempt institution or whether a COS from F-1 OPT covers the gap.
H-1B Visa Identity Access Management: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Identity Access Management role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. IAM roles typically qualify because they require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, cybersecurity, or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the specific job duties, not just the title. Roles focused on identity governance, privileged access management, or directory services administration consistently meet the specialty occupation standard when the employer documents the degree requirement clearly.
Which employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for IAM positions?
Financial services firms, large health systems, federal contractors, and enterprise technology companies are the most active sponsors for IAM roles. These sectors face regulatory mandates around access controls and identity governance that create sustained demand. You can find employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history for IAM roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL disclosure data by occupation.
What happens to my H-1B status if I move from a general IT role into a specialized IAM function at the same employer?
A material change in job duties can require an amended H-1B petition, even within the same company. If your SOC code changes or the new role involves meaningfully different responsibilities, your employer should file an amended I-129 before the transition takes effect. Failing to amend can create a status gap that affects future extensions or green card filings.
How does prevailing wage affect H-1B sponsorship for IAM engineers?
Your employer's Labor Condition Application must certify wages at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and work location. IAM roles in high-cost metro areas like New York or San Francisco carry higher Level II and Level III thresholds. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the applicable wage level before you receive an offer so you can evaluate whether the employer's LCA will reflect your actual scope of work.
Can I switch H-1B sponsors to a new IAM employer mid-status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. If your current petition has been approved and you've been in valid H-1B status, a new employer can file a cap-exempt transfer petition and you can start working as soon as it's filed, without waiting for approval. The new employer must file an LCA for the IAM role at the new worksite before submitting the I-129 transfer.
