Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Oil And Gas
Verify your degree qualifies as specialty occupation
USCIS requires your role to demand a specific bachelor's degree, not just any degree. Petroleum engineer, geoscientist, and reservoir engineer positions have strong precedent. Broader titles like 'operations manager' face more RFEs, so confirm your job description maps to your field of study.
Search LCA filings for active oil and gas sponsors
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by H-1B LCA filing history in oil and gas occupations. This shows you which companies have actively sponsored similar roles, saving you from applying to employers who haven't filed for your job type.
Check prevailing wage tiers before accepting an offer
Run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before finalizing compensation. Oil and gas wages vary sharply between Houston, the Permian Basin, and offshore Gulf platforms. Your offer must meet the DOL-certified prevailing wage, or the LCA filing will fail.
Target integrated majors and large oilfield services firms
Companies with in-house immigration teams process H-1B petitions faster and with fewer errors than smaller independents relying on outside counsel. Integrated operators and large oilfield services contractors file H-1B LCAs regularly, signaling established sponsorship infrastructure.
Clarify worksite location before I-129 filing begins
Oil and gas workers often rotate between field sites, refineries, and corporate offices. Your employer must post the LCA at each primary worksite. If your role involves frequent site changes, confirm your employer understands USCIS's worksite requirements before the petition is submitted.
Use O*NET to align your job description with USCIS criteria
Pull the O*NET occupation profile for your exact job title to confirm it lists a specific degree requirement rather than 'any bachelor's degree.' Employers referencing O*NET data in their petition documentation strengthen the specialty occupation argument for petroleum and engineering roles.
H-1B Visa Oil And Gas: Frequently Asked Questions
Do oil and gas jobs commonly qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Petroleum engineers, reservoir engineers, geoscientists, and chemical engineers working in oil and gas routinely qualify as specialty occupations because USCIS recognizes these roles require a directly related bachelor's degree. Titles like 'field technician' or 'plant operator' face higher denial risk since they don't always require a specific degree. Your job description needs to reflect degree-level complexity to support the petition.
Which types of oil and gas employers sponsor H-1B visas?
Integrated majors, large independent operators, and oilfield services contractors are the most active H-1B sponsors in this sector. Midstream pipeline companies and LNG terminal operators also file regularly for engineering and technical roles. To find employers with a documented filing history for oil and gas positions, search Migrate Mate, which filters roles by verified LCA data.
Does working on offshore rigs or rotating field sites affect my H-1B status?
Yes. USCIS ties your H-1B approval to the worksite locations listed in the LCA. Offshore platforms and rotating field assignments require your employer to post the LCA at each principal worksite and, in some cases, file amended petitions if your primary location changes. Clarify your expected work locations with HR before the I-129 is filed to avoid compliance issues.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect oil and gas job seekers?
If you're not currently in H-1B status and your prospective employer is cap-subject, you'll need to enter the USCIS annual lottery. Registration opens in March for an October 1 start date, so timing your job search accordingly matters. Some oil and gas employers, including universities and nonprofit research institutes conducting energy research, are cap-exempt and can file outside the lottery window.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new oil and gas employer mid-contract?
H-1B portability lets you start working for a new employer once they file a non-frivolous transfer petition, without waiting for approval. The new employer must file a new LCA certified at the prevailing wage for your new worksite, and your job duties must still qualify as specialty occupation. If you're switching from one oil and gas company to another in the same role, portability typically applies cleanly.
