Verify your SOC code before applying
Test Automation Engineers are typically classified under SOC 15-1252. Confirm this on O*NET before interviews so you can speak to the specialty occupation standard confidently and catch employers who misclassify the role.
Check employer LCA history on Migrate Mate
Before applying anywhere, use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified LCA filing history for software engineering roles. This cuts out companies that have never sponsored H-1B petitions and focuses your search on proven sponsors.
Prioritize E-Verify enrolled employers early
If you're on F-1 OPT and targeting STEM extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask about E-Verify status during the recruiter screen, not after an offer, so you don't waste cycles on ineligible companies.
Negotiate offer timing around the H-1B cap
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only start employment on October 1 after April registration. If you receive an offer in July, work with the employer to structure a start date that fits this window rather than accepting a role that can't be filed in time.
Document your automation tooling expertise precisely
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation claims for QA and testing roles. Attach project documentation showing you designed and built automation frameworks, not just executed test scripts. This distinction directly supports the employer's specialty occupation argument in the I-129 petition.
Request the LCA wage level in writing before signing
DOL requires employers to pay the prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and location. Ask your employer which wage level they filed under when you receive the offer. Level I wages can fall below market rate, affecting both your income and future green card filings.
H-1B Visa Test Automation Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Test Automation Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the job duties, not just the title. Roles focused on scripting and executing manual test cases carry more risk than positions designing automation frameworks, writing code, and integrating with CI/CD pipelines, so your offer letter's duty description matters.
Which SOC code applies to Test Automation Engineers, and why does it matter?
Most Test Automation Engineer roles are filed under SOC 15-1252, Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers, though some employers use 15-1251 or 15-1256 depending on duties. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage your employer must meet under DOL rules. You can verify the job zone and typical education requirements for your specific code on O*NET before negotiating your offer.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for Test Automation Engineers?
Use Migrate Mate to search by role and filter for employers with verified LCA filing history. Companies that have certified Labor Condition Applications for software quality and testing roles are the ones actively navigating the H-1B process, which means faster internal workflows and less friction when your petition is being prepared.
Can my employer file an H-1B petition for me if I'm currently on OPT?
Yes. If you're on F-1 OPT, your employer can submit an H-1B registration during the April cap season. If selected, they file the full I-129 petition and you can continue working on OPT until October 1, when H-1B status begins. If your OPT expires before October 1, cap-gap protection through USCIS keeps you authorized to work as long as your employer filed before your OPT end date.
What documentation strengthens an H-1B petition for a Test Automation Engineer?
The employer needs to demonstrate the role requires a specific bachelor's degree. Supporting documents typically include a detailed job description naming specific automation tools and frameworks, your degree transcripts showing a related major, and any certifications in ISTQB, Selenium, or similar platforms. If your degree is in a tangentially related field, a credential evaluation and a skills matrix mapping your coursework to the role's technical requirements can reduce the risk of a Request for Evidence from USCIS.
