Match your degree to the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the BI Engineer role. A degree in computer science, information systems, statistics, or engineering supports the petition most cleanly. A business degree without a technical concentration can draw an RFE.
Look up LCA filings by occupation code
DOL classifies BI Engineer roles under SOC code 15-1211 or 15-1243 depending on the employer. Search Migrate Mate by occupation code to see which employers have active Labor Condition Application filings for BI roles before applying.
Target E-Verify enrolled employers early
If you're on OPT and need cap-gap protection, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm enrollment before your offer stage, not after, since switching employers during cap-gap is time-sensitive and can jeopardize your work authorization.
Verify the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the Level I through Level IV prevailing wage for your job title and work location before salary discussions. Your offer must meet the certified LCA wage, so knowing the floor prevents late-stage complications.
Clarify which tools define the specialty occupation
USCIS evaluates whether the specific BI Engineer role genuinely requires a degree. Make sure your job description names tools like SQL, Tableau, Power BI, or Python, and that the employer can document why a bachelor's degree in a specific field is a minimum requirement.
Request premium processing if your start date is firm
Standard I-129 adjudication can run several months. If your employer has a hard start date tied to project timelines, ask during offer negotiation whether they'll pay for premium processing. USCIS guarantees a decision within 15 business days under that option.

Find Business Intelligence Engineer JobsBusiness Intelligence Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Business Intelligence Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS treats BI Engineer positions as specialty occupations when the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, information systems, or statistics. The employer's job description needs to document that a specific technical degree is a genuine minimum requirement, not just a preference, to withstand scrutiny.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Business Intelligence Engineers?
Technology companies, financial services firms, healthcare systems, and large retailers are among the most active filers for BI Engineer roles. DOL Labor Condition Application disclosure data identifies which employers have filed for this occupation code by location and fiscal year. Migrate Mate surfaces that filing history so you can target sponsors before applying.
What happens to my H-1B if my BI Engineer role shifts to a different team or project?
A material change in job duties, work location, or employer entity can require an amended I-129 petition before the change takes effect. Moving to a new office in a different metropolitan area almost always triggers an LCA amendment. Confirm with your employer's immigration counsel whether your new assignment crosses that threshold, since working under an outdated LCA creates compliance risk.
Can I use O*NET data to support my H-1B specialty occupation argument?
O*NET classifications can reinforce the specialty occupation argument by documenting that the occupation typically requires a bachelor's degree and involves complex analytical tasks. Some employers include O*NET job zone data in their H-1B support letters. It's a useful supplement but not a substitute for employer documentation showing that the specific role requires the degree.
How do I know if a BI Engineer job posting is likely to come with H-1B sponsorship?
Postings that mention 'visa sponsorship available' or 'will sponsor' are explicit signals, but many sponsors don't advertise it upfront. Checking an employer's LCA filing history through DOL disclosure data is a more reliable method. Migrate Mate filters BI Engineer roles by verified sponsorship history so you're not wasting applications on employers who don't file.
