Responsibilities
Account Vending:
- Provision and configure new AWS accounts for requesting teams, ensuring each is delivered with the correct baseline configuration and guardrails.
- Improve and automate the account-vending process to reduce turnaround time and manual effort.
Landing Zone Management:
- Design, build, and maintain the AWS landing zone architecture (AWS Organizations, Control Tower, account baselines) that underpins the organization’s AWS footprint.
- Implement network, identity, and cyber security policies as automated guardrails within the landing zone, in partnership with the teams that own those policies.
Region Build-Out & Management:
- Build and configure new AWS regions in line with landing zone and platform standards, ensuring consistency across the org’s AWS footprint.
- Manage the ongoing health and configuration of existing regions, including rollout of platform changes across regions.
Service Enablement & Lifecycle Management:
- Evaluate new AWS services for adoption and manage the process of enabling them for use across the organization.
- Own the lifecycle of enabled services, including updates, deprecations, and migrations, communicating changes to consuming teams with adequate lead time.
- Maintain a clear inventory and documentation of which services are enabled, in what regions, and under what guardrails.
Automation & Process Improvement:
- Continuously evaluate opportunities to automate manual platform processes, from account provisioning to service enablement to compliance checks.
- Design and build self-service capabilities so consuming teams can accomplish common tasks (requesting accounts, checking compliance status, discovering enabled services) without needing direct platform team involvement.
- Identify friction points in existing workflows and drive process improvements, partnering with consuming teams to understand where the platform creates unnecessary overhead.
- Measure the impact of automation and self-service efforts (e.g., reduced turnaround time, reduced ticket volume) and iterate based on results.
Operations:
- Monitor the health and compliance posture of the account fleet, landing zones, and enabled services, identifying and remediating drift from platform standards.
- Troubleshoot platform-level issues (accounts, landing zones, regions, service enablement), coordinating with network, identity, or cyber teams when an issue originates outside the platform’s scope.
- Build tooling and dashboards that give consuming teams and platform stakeholders visibility into the state of the platform.
- Document platform architecture, standards, and onboarding processes for both internal use and consuming teams.
Skillsets
- 5+ years of experience as a Cloud/AWS Solutions Architect, including hands-on design and management of multi-account AWS environments.
- Deep, hands-on expertise with AWS landing zone constructs such as AWS Organizations, Control Tower, Service Catalog/Account Factory, and account baselining.
- Strong knowledge of AWS networking, identity (IAM, IAM Identity Center), and security services, with experience implementing guardrails in partnership with network, identity, and cyber teams.
- Experience building and operating AWS regions at scale, including rollout and consistency management across an organization’s footprint.
- Proven ability to evaluate, enable, and manage the lifecycle of AWS services, including deprecations and migrations, with clear communication to affected teams.
- Strong automation and infrastructure-as-code skills (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Lambda) to build self-service capabilities and reduce manual platform work.
- Experience with monitoring, compliance, and drift-detection tooling (e.g., AWS Config, Security Hub, CloudWatch) to maintain platform health.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across account, network, identity, and service-enablement issues, with the judgment to know when to loop in adjacent teams.
- Excellent documentation skills, with experience maintaining architecture, standards, and onboarding materials for both internal and consuming teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for partnering with cross-functional teams and stakeholders across a decentralized organization.

Verify your role meets specialty occupation
AWS Engineer positions must require a specific bachelor's degree, not just any technical degree. Pull the O*NET profile for cloud engineers to confirm the job zone and degree requirement language before your employer files the LCA.
Target cap-exempt employers first
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated organizations can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery exposure. AWS infrastructure roles exist at these employers, and you can start without waiting for the April registration window.
Check DOL prevailing wage before negotiating
Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your exact SOC code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your metro area before signing an offer, Level I and Level II wages differ significantly for cloud roles.
Use Migrate Mate to find active H-1B sponsors
Filter Migrate Mate by AWS Engineer roles to see employers with verified LCA filing history. This surfaces companies that have sponsored the specific occupation before, not just employers who claim to be open to sponsorship in general.
Disclose multi-site work arrangements upfront
If your AWS role involves client sites or remote work across multiple locations, each worksite may require a separate LCA posting. Flag this for your employer before petition filing, USCIS scrutinizes itinerant and third-party placement arrangements closely.
Request premium processing for AWS contract roles
If your offer is contingent on a specific project start date, ask your employer to file with premium processing. USCIS adjudicates premium petitions within 15 business days, which matters when a client deployment timeline is fixed.
H-1B Visa Aws Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AWS Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, AWS Engineer roles qualify when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, or a directly related field. The key is that the degree requirement must be specific to the role, not a general preference for any technical background. Your employer documents this in the LCA and I-129 petition filed with USCIS.
Which industries file the most H-1B LCAs for AWS Engineer positions?
Technology companies file the highest volume, but AWS infrastructure roles with active LCA history also appear heavily in financial services, healthcare IT, defense contracting, and cloud consulting firms. Government-affiliated contractors and universities with large research computing infrastructure are also consistent sponsors. Migrate Mate filters by occupation and LCA filing history so you can see which employers in your target industry have sponsored this role.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new AWS Engineer role without restarting the process?
Yes, H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer once the transfer petition is filed, you don't need approval first, as long as your current H-1B was approved and you've been in valid status for at least 180 days. Your new employer must file a new I-129 and LCA for the specific role and location before your start date.
How does a third-party client site affect my H-1B as an AWS Engineer?
If you're placed at a client site rather than your employer's own facility, USCIS applies heightened scrutiny to confirm the employer-employee relationship is genuine and the specialty occupation requirement is real. Your employer should document the specific AWS engineering duties you'll perform at the client location, not just the client's general IT needs. Contracts and statements of work are typically required.
What happens to my H-1B status if my AWS project ends early?
If your employer terminates your employment before your H-1B period ends, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, change status, or depart the U.S. Your employer is responsible for return transportation costs if they terminate you without cause. Filing an H-1B transfer petition with a new employer before the 60 days expire preserves your status while the new petition is pending.
