Align your degree to the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your field of study and the job duties. For Field Application Engineers, degrees in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related discipline give your petition the clearest specialty occupation footing.
Search LCA filings by SOC code
Field Application Engineer roles typically file under SOC 17-2061 or 17-2199. Pull historical LCA disclosure data through the OFLC Wage Search to identify which employers file regularly for this title before you apply.
Target E-Verify enrolled employers early
If your OPT is expiring and you need cap-gap protection, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm enrollment during your offer conversations, not after you've signed. This is a hard eligibility requirement, not a formality.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Search Field Application Engineer roles on Migrate Mate to see employers filtered by confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. This saves time you'd otherwise spend manually cross-referencing DOL disclosure files for each company.
Get your prevailing wage level right
Field Application Engineers span wage levels one through four depending on supervision and complexity. Pull your employer's offered level from the OFLC Wage Search and flag it if it's level one, USCIS increasingly scrutinizes petitions where wage level suggests entry-level work for a specialty occupation.
Request premium processing before your start date
Standard I-129 adjudication can run three to five months. If your employer files close to your OPT expiration or a project deadline, request premium processing upfront so you receive a decision within 15 business days, per USCIS.
H-1B Visa Field Application Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Field Application Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS evaluates whether the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field. Field Application Engineers typically require a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a directly related discipline, and employers document this in the Labor Condition Application and supporting petition. Roles with vague or generalist degree requirements can draw Requests for Evidence, so the job description wording matters.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Field Application Engineers?
Semiconductor manufacturers, electronic test and measurement companies, industrial automation firms, and embedded systems vendors are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this title. These employers file LCAs regularly because the role requires deep product knowledge that takes time to develop internally. You can verify an employer's filing history by checking DOL LCA disclosure data or browsing roles on Migrate Mate, which filters positions by confirmed sponsorship activity.
Can I switch employers on H-1B as a Field Application Engineer without losing my status?
Yes, under H-1B portability provisions, you can start with a new employer as soon as they file an I-129 petition on your behalf, provided your current H-1B was approved, you've been in valid status, and you're moving to a similar role. For Field Application Engineers, a role at a different company in the same product vertical generally satisfies the 'same or similar' standard, but your employer's attorney should confirm this based on the specific SOC codes involved.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect H-1B sponsorship for this role?
Your employer must certify on the LCA that they'll pay at least the prevailing wage for your role, experience level, and work location. Field Application Engineers who cover a wide territory or work remotely from a different metro than their employer's headquarters may have their LCA wages tied to the worksite location, not the company's headquarters city. Verify this with your employer before the LCA is filed, since amending it later adds time to the process.
What documentation should I prepare before an employer files my H-1B petition?
Gather your academic credentials, any credential evaluation reports if your degree is from outside the U.S., employment verification letters from prior roles, and any publications or technical certifications that reinforce your specialty occupation claim. Field Application Engineers who carry product certifications from manufacturers they support can use those to strengthen the petition. O*NET's occupation profile for this role is useful for cross-referencing the degree requirements documented in your employer's support letter.
