Map your credentials to specialty occupation standards
USCIS evaluates Director of Technology petitions against specialty occupation criteria. Pull the O*NET profile for your SOC code to document the theoretical and practical application of IT knowledge your role requires, this directly supports your employer's RFE response if challenged.
Filter employers by LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Search Director of Technology roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active Labor Condition Applications for this title. That filing history confirms the employer knows the H-1B process and has already cleared the DOL wage certification step.
Target cap-exempt employers to avoid lottery risk
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government entities are cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B petition goes straight to USCIS without entering the annual lottery. Director of Technology roles at these organizations are filed year-round with no selection uncertainty.
Verify prevailing wage tier before negotiating compensation
Run your job location and SOC code through the OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions. Director of Technology offers at Level III or IV wages signal the employer can file a defensible LCA, a Level I offer in a high-cost metro is a petition risk.
Confirm the employer's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
USCIS requires H-1B employers to be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask your offer contact to confirm enrollment status early, a Director of Technology role at an unenrolled employer cannot be sponsored, and switching employers mid-process resets the petition timeline.
Request premium processing when your start date is fixed
If your Director of Technology role has a hard start date tied to a product launch or budget cycle, ask your employer to file with USCIS premium processing. Standard adjudication runs several months; premium gets a decision within 15 business days.

Find Director Of Technology JobsDirector Of Technology H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Director of Technology role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, information systems, or engineering. USCIS looks at whether the role's duties are complex enough that a specific degree is a minimum requirement, not merely preferred. Titles alone don't qualify the role, the job description and educational requirement do.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B visas for this role?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified Labor Condition Application filing history for Director of Technology positions, so you can focus your search on companies already cleared through the DOL wage certification process. This cuts out employers who list sponsorship as possible but have never actually filed an H-1B petition for this title.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm laid off from a Director of Technology role?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new sponsoring employer, transfer your H-1B, change status, or depart the U.S. During that window you can't work, but you remain in a period of authorized stay. Acting quickly matters, a new employer can file an H-1B transfer before the grace period ends.
Can my employer sponsor me for an H-1B if the Director of Technology role is fully remote?
Yes, but the employer must file a separate Labor Condition Application for each location where you'll work for more than 30 workdays in a year. For remote Director of Technology roles, that typically means an LCA covering your home address. USCIS and DOL treat each work location as a distinct wage obligation, so your employer needs to plan accordingly.
Does a master's degree in a non-IT field strengthen my H-1B petition for this title?
It depends on the field. A master's in business administration with a technology management concentration can support a specialty occupation argument for a Director of Technology petition, but USCIS scrutinizes the connection between the degree and the role's actual duties. A computer science or information systems degree creates the cleanest alignment and reduces the risk of a Request for Evidence.
