H-1B Visa Equine Veterinarian Jobs
Equine veterinarian roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because they require at least a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Large equine practices, racing operations, and university veterinary hospitals are among the employers with active H-1B filing history. No lottery exemption applies, so timing your job search around the April cap season matters.

Verify your DVM degree meets USCIS requirements
USCIS requires your degree to directly relate to equine veterinary work. If your DVM is from a non-U.S. institution, get a credential evaluation confirming equivalency to a U.S. DVM before your employer files the petition.
Check state veterinary licensure before accepting offers
Every state requires a veterinary license before you can practice, and licensing timelines vary. Confirm the state board's processing time and NAVLE score transfer process so your license is in hand before your H-1B start date.
Target employers with equine-specific LCA filing history
Equine practices, thoroughbred racing facilities, and veterinary schools file LCAs under SOC code 29-1131. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers with verified H-1B filing history specifically for veterinary roles, so you're not cold-approaching sponsors.
Negotiate offer timing around the H-1B cap season
H-1B registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer in summer or fall, ask your employer whether they'll file for the next cap cycle or pursue a cap-exempt institution like a university veterinary hospital.
Confirm prevailing wage before the LCA is filed
Your employer must certify your salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for veterinarians in your work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search yourself using SOC code 29-1131 to verify the wage level before the LCA is submitted.

Find Equine Veterinarian JobsEquine Veterinarian H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an equine veterinarian role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies veterinarians under SOC code 29-1131, and the role requires at minimum a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in a directly related field. Equine-specific practice qualifies because the degree requirement is standard and non-discretionary across the profession. Your employer confirms this in the Labor Condition Application.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for equine veterinarians?
Large equine practices, thoroughbred and standardbred racing operations, equine hospitals, university veterinary schools, and USDA research facilities are the most active sponsors. University and government positions are cap-exempt, meaning they can file outside the April lottery window. Browse employers with verified filing history on Migrate Mate to narrow your search.
Can I work as an equine veterinarian on H-1B while my state license is pending?
No. You must hold an active state veterinary license before practicing, and USCIS expects proof of licensure at the time of filing or as a condition of the approval. Some employers will extend an offer contingent on licensure and file the petition once your license is issued. Confirm the state board timeline early.
What happens to my H-1B status if my equine practice employer closes or changes ownership?
H-1B status is employer-specific. If your employer closes, is sold, or undergoes a major restructuring, your authorization may no longer be valid. You have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer and have them file an H-1B transfer petition. The new employer can file the transfer before you start.
Does equine veterinary work at a racetrack qualify differently than a private practice for H-1B purposes?
No, the qualifying standard is the same: the role must require a DVM and the employer must file an LCA certifying prevailing wages. Racetrack employers are cap-subject unless affiliated with a qualifying cap-exempt institution. Some tracks employ veterinarians through staffing arrangements, so confirm which entity is the H-1B petitioner before signing an offer.
