Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Facility Technician
Pull your SOC code before applying
Facility Technician roles file under SOC 49-9071 (Maintenance and Repair Workers) or 17-3026 (Industrial Engineering Technologists). Confirm which code an employer used in past LCA filings so you can match your resume language to their petition framing.
Search employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history in facilities and maintenance roles. Targeting companies that have sponsored this title before cuts the time spent convincing HR that sponsorship is possible.
Document your degree-to-role connection early
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation status for technical roles. Prepare a credential evaluation showing your engineering or facilities management degree directly supports the job duties, not just general technical work. Do this before you get an offer.
Target cap-exempt employers in healthcare and higher education
Hospitals, university facilities departments, and nonprofit research institutions are cap-exempt H-1B employers. A cap-exempt petition can file any time of year, bypassing the April lottery entirely. Prioritize these if you need work authorization before October 1.
Verify the offered wage meets DOL prevailing wage
Before accepting an offer, check the OFLC Wage Search for the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above this level, and underpaying is a common reason petitions draw USCIS scrutiny.
File I-129 with premium processing if your start date is tight
Standard H-1B adjudication can run several months. If your current OPT or status expires close to the October 1 cap-subject start date, ask your employer to use USCIS premium processing, which targets a 15-business-day decision on the petition.
H-1B Visa Facility Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Facility Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. If the job requires at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, facilities management, or a directly related technical field as a minimum requirement, it can qualify. Roles framed as general maintenance or repair work, where any background is acceptable, typically do not meet the specialty occupation standard USCIS applies.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for Facility Technician positions most consistently?
Healthcare systems, semiconductor and advanced manufacturing facilities, pharmaceutical companies, and large research universities file H-1B petitions for Facility Technicians most regularly. These employers run complex, regulated environments where degree-level technical knowledge is a documented job requirement, which supports the specialty occupation argument. You can browse verified sponsoring employers by industry on Migrate Mate.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Facility Technician employer mid-year?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed with USCIS, without waiting for approval, as long as your prior H-1B was properly approved and you've been maintaining valid status. The new employer files a new I-129 petition and must meet prevailing wage requirements for your role and location.
What documentation does my employer need to file an H-1B petition for a Facility Technician role?
Your employer starts by filing a Labor Condition Application with the DOL, certifying the offered wage meets the prevailing wage for the role's SOC code and work location. Once the LCA is certified, they file Form I-129 with USCIS along with your degree credentials, a credential evaluation if your degree is foreign, and a detailed job duties description tying the role to the specialty occupation requirement.
How do I find out if a Facility Technician job posting is at a company that sponsors H-1B visas?
Check whether the employer has a history of filing LCAs for facilities or maintenance roles. Migrate Mate surfaces this DOL Labor Condition Application filing history by employer and occupation, so you can see whether a company has sponsored this role type before approaching them. Targeting employers with prior filings in this category avoids the delay of educating HR about the process from scratch.
