Verify your degree field matches
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree and the role. A supply chain, industrial engineering, or operations management degree maps cleanly. A general business degree may trigger an RFE, so gather transcripts showing relevant coursework before applying.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate's employer database to filter companies that have filed LCAs for distribution and logistics operations titles. This tells you which employers have already navigated H-1B sponsorship for roles like yours, not just which ones say they're open to it.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Distribution Operations Manager prevailing wages vary by metropolitan area and experience level. Run your job's SOC code through OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer so you can confirm the employer's LCA wage meets DOL requirements for your specific location.
Flag multi-site operations in your petition
If your role covers multiple distribution centers or regions, your employer must file a separate LCA for each primary worksite. Confirm with the sponsoring employer that their H-1B petition accounts for all locations where you'll regularly work, not just headquarters.
Review the O*NET profile before your interview
The O*NET occupation profile for Distribution Managers documents the degree requirements and specialized knowledge USCIS expects. Referencing specific competencies from that profile during your interview helps you and your employer frame the specialty occupation argument more precisely.
Negotiate a start date after cap-gap protection
If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT, your cap-gap protection extends authorization through September 30. Structure your offer letter start date to fall within that window so there's no gap in employment authorization before your H-1B becomes effective on October 1.
H-1B Visa Distribution Operations Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Distribution Operations Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as supply chain management, industrial engineering, or logistics. Roles that accept any degree or substitute years of experience for a degree requirement can face USCIS scrutiny, so the job description and LCA must reflect a genuine degree requirement tied to the specific discipline.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for Distribution Operations Manager roles?
E-commerce fulfillment networks, third-party logistics providers, consumer goods manufacturers, and large retail chains file LCAs for distribution operations titles regularly. Companies operating high-volume or technically complex distribution infrastructure, including automated warehousing and cold-chain logistics, are more likely to sponsor because the role demands specialized systems knowledge. You can browse employers with verified filing history on Migrate Mate.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new distribution employer mid-year?
Yes. H-1B portability lets you start working for a new sponsoring employer once they file a non-frivolous I-129 transfer petition, without waiting for approval. The new employer must file a fresh LCA matching the wage level and location for your role. You don't need to wait for cap season or re-enter the lottery.
How does working across multiple distribution sites affect my H-1B petition?
USCIS and DOL treat each primary worksite as a separate LCA obligation. If your role requires you to regularly supervise or work at distribution centers in different metropolitan statistical areas, your employer must certify a separate LCA for each location. Short-term placements under 60 days in a rolling year may qualify for a short-worksite exemption, but your employer's counsel should confirm this based on your specific assignment structure.
What SOC code applies to Distribution Operations Manager roles for the LCA?
Most Distribution Operations Manager positions are filed under SOC 11-3071, Transportation, Storage, and Distribution Managers. Your employer uses this code to pull the prevailing wage from DOL's wage database for the LCA. If your role has a heavy manufacturing or industrial component, the employer may use a different SOC code, which affects the certified wage floor. Verify the SOC code on your LCA before signing any offer documentation.
