Match your degree to the role description
H-1B specialty occupation requires your degree field to directly relate to Service Coordinator duties. A degree in social work, healthcare administration, or human services strengthens your petition. A general business degree alone may trigger an RFE from USCIS.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Pull the prevailing wage for Service Coordinator under SOC code 11-9151 in your target metro before your offer letter is signed. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above that level, so knowing the floor protects you at the negotiation stage.
Target employers with cap-exempt status
Hospitals, nonprofits affiliated with universities, and government research organizations can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap. Service Coordinator roles at these employers skip the lottery entirely, giving you a predictable path to approval rather than a 25% chance.
Filter employers by LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Search Service Coordinator roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have certified LCAs for this job title. Filing history signals that the employer already understands the H-1B process, reducing the risk of delays caused by inexperienced HR or legal teams.
Confirm O*NET job zone before your petition is filed
Service Coordinator spans multiple O*NET job zones depending on the industry. Your employer's attorney should document that your specific role requires a bachelor's degree as a minimum entry requirement, not just a preference, to satisfy USCIS specialty occupation standards.
Request premium processing when timelines are tight
If your OPT EAD expires within six months of a job start date, ask your employer to file with premium processing. USCIS adjudicates premium petitions within 15 business days, avoiding the gap in work authorization that standard processing can create for Service Coordinator transitions.
H-1B Visa Service Coordinator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Service Coordinator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS requires that the role normally require a bachelor's degree in a specific field as a minimum entry requirement. Service Coordinator roles in healthcare, managed care, or social services that require a degree in social work, healthcare administration, or a related field typically qualify. Generalist coordination roles with no specific degree requirement are more likely to face an RFE.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Service Coordinator positions?
Healthcare systems, managed care organizations, behavioral health providers, and nonprofit social services agencies are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for Service Coordinator roles. Many of these employers hold cap-exempt status, meaning they can file outside the annual H-1B lottery. You can browse verified H-1B-sponsoring employers for this role on Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application filing history by job title.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Service Coordinator contract ends early?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new sponsoring employer, change to another nonimmigrant status, or depart the U.S. If a new employer files an H-1B transfer petition before the grace period expires, you can begin working for the new employer once USCIS receives the petition. The grace period applies once per authorized validity period, so back-to-back contract endings can exhaust it quickly.
Can a Service Coordinator employer transfer my H-1B from a previous employer?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a non-frivolous H-1B transfer petition with USCIS, without waiting for approval. The new employer must file a fresh LCA certified by DOL for your new role and location. You don't need to leave the U.S. or restart the process from scratch as long as you've maintained valid H-1B status.
How does prevailing wage apply to Service Coordinator H-1B petitions?
DOL sets four wage levels for each occupation and metro area. Your employer's LCA must certify that your offered wage meets at least the Level I prevailing wage for Service Coordinator under the applicable SOC code in your work location. You can look up the applicable wage floor using the OFLC Wage Search tool before accepting an offer. Employers who underpay relative to the prevailing wage risk LCA violations and petition denial.
