Who We Are
Flagship Pioneering is a biotechnology company that invents and builds platform companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble capital to allow them to take courageous leaps. Those big leaps in human health and sustainability exponentially accelerate scientific progress in areas ranging from cancer detection and treatment to nature-positive agriculture.
What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance biotechnology by uniting life science innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our scientific founders, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and transform for the benefit of people and planet.
Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity's most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.
Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE's "Change the World" list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies and has been twice named to Fast Company's annual list of the World's Most Innovative Companies.
Senior Analyst/Manager, Strategic Business Operations and Analytics
The Senior Analyst/Manager, Strategic Business Operations and Analytics will sit within the Strategic Business Operations and Analytics (SBOA) team and report into SBOA leadership, while spending the majority of their time supporting the Vice President leading Flagship's Commercial and Competitive Insights (CCI) capability within Pipeline & Platform Innovation (P&PI). CCI is an internal capability that provides commercial strategy and competitive intelligence support to pipeline-building engagements across Flagship's ecosystem companies—and SBOA partners with P&PI to provide the analytical horsepower behind that work. This role focuses on executing the day-to-day CCI workstreams—market opportunity, competitive landscaping, concept pressure-testing, and investment-grade readiness—while also helping build the reusable frameworks, datasets, and AI-enabled tools that make these analyses scalable. This is an entrepreneurial role for someone who is eager to develop both strategic and technical skills, work directly with senior leaders, and operate at the intersection of science, commercial strategy, and finance in a dynamic, fast-growing environment.
Responsibilities:
- Support commercial assessment, competitive intelligence, and concept evaluation across Flagship pipeline-building engagements by contributing to value framing, opportunity prioritization, etc.
- Conduct competitive landscape analysis by target, mechanism, modality, and indication using numerous platforms/databases.
- Build models and analyses (value sizing, indication scoring, deal-comp benchmarking, scenario and sensitivity analysis) to inform concept shaping and investment-grade recommendations.
- Help develop reusable frameworks, scoring methodologies, and decision-support tools that compound value across CCI engagements.
- Leverage AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) for long-document synthesis, structured commercial/competitive analysis, and interactive deliverables.
- Pressure-test concept differentiation, partnerability, and commercial attractiveness ahead of senior leadership review.
- Prepare materials and present analyses to Managing Directors, Partners, and ecosystem company leadership.
- Support and manage end-to-end execution of assigned workstreams within engagement timelines, coordinating with CCI, P&PI project leads, and other SBOA colleagues.
- Complete ad hoc requests and other duties as needed with minimal oversight and in a timely manner.
- Continually learn across topics related to science, finance, strategy, competitive intelligence, and AI-enabled analytics.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in a biological, quantitative, or business field preferred (PhD not required).
- At least 2 years of experience in management consulting, equity research, investment banking, corporate strategy, business development, or a related analytical role—ideally with life sciences exposure.
- Strong communication, presentation, collaboration, and partnership skills, including synthesizing complex information for senior audiences and presenting commercial/financial content to non-financial stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and modeling skills; comfort working with quantitative data, building structured frameworks, and drawing clear conclusions from incomplete information.
- Effective time management, organization, and prioritization skills in managing multiple workstreams with proven ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to work conscientiously and with minimal direction, using good judgment and taking initiative on both short and long-range projects.
- Ability to work as a team member, multi-task, and be flexible to adapt to the ever-changing priorities of a dynamic, fast-growing company.
- A "roll-up-your-sleeves" entrepreneurial attitude.
- Strategic thinker with strong critical thinking, problem-solving, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Foundational understanding of drug development, the biopharma value chain, and/or competitive dynamics in life sciences (or strong demonstrated curiosity and ability to ramp quickly).
- Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint, and familiarity with AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT).
Flagship Pioneering and our ecosystem companies are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Strategy Business Operations
Align your degree to the role
USCIS scrutinizes whether your degree directly relates to strategy or operations work. A business administration, management, or industrial engineering degree maps cleanly. If your degree is in an adjacent field, document how your coursework covers planning, analytics, or process optimization.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
Use the OFLC Wage Search to filter Labor Condition Applications under SOC codes for management analysts and operations specialists. This shows which employers actively filed for these roles, not just which ones advertise them.
Target companies with dedicated operations functions
Large tech, financial services, and healthcare companies typically have centralized strategy and operations teams with established H-1B filing pipelines. Smaller firms often lack the HR infrastructure to support sponsorship for non-engineering roles, so org structure matters.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Filter Strategy Business Operations roles by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history on Migrate Mate. This removes companies that list the title but have no documented sponsorship activity, saving significant time in your outreach.
Clarify the job duties match specialty occupation criteria
Before accepting an offer, review the job description against the O*NET profile for your specific SOC code. Vague language like 'support business initiatives' can trigger an RFE. Ask the employer to use degree-specific language in the offer letter and I-129 petition.
Time your offer around the cap registration window
H-1B cap registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer in June, you'll wait until the following March to register. Negotiating a start date or consulting arrangement that bridges this gap is a practical step worth raising with the employer directly.
H-1B Visa Strategy Business Operations: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Strategy Business Operations roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Yes, when the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field like business administration, management, finance, or operations research. The key is that the degree requirement must be tied to the role itself, not just listed as a preference. Roles framed as generalist coordination or administrative support are more likely to face scrutiny from USCIS.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most consistently for strategy and operations professionals?
Technology companies, management consulting firms, financial services institutions, and large healthcare systems have the most established H-1B filing infrastructure for strategy and operations roles. These employers typically have dedicated immigration teams and recurring LCA filings under relevant SOC codes. You can confirm active filing history for specific employers on Migrate Mate before applying.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect strategy and operations job offers?
The employer must pay you at least the prevailing wage for your role, experience level, and work location, as determined by DOL wage data. For strategy and operations titles, wage levels vary significantly by metro area and seniority tier. You can look up the applicable wage floor using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating an offer to understand whether the compensation is compliant.
Can I work in a strategy or operations role while on OPT and transition to H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. If your degree field aligns with the role, employers can sponsor you for H-1B while you're authorized on OPT. The critical timing issue is the cap registration window in March. If your OPT expires before October 1 of the cap year you're selected in, you may need a STEM OPT extension to bridge the gap, which requires working for an E-Verify enrolled employer.
What should I ask an employer during the interview process to assess their H-1B sponsorship capability?
Ask specifically whether the company has sponsored H-1B visas for strategy or operations roles before, not just for engineering or technical positions. Find out whether they work with an immigration attorney or handle filings in-house, and whether they cover premium processing fees. Employers with no prior experience sponsoring non-engineering roles sometimes underestimate the documentation requirements for specialty occupation proof.
