Map your certifications to LCA job codes
CISSP, CISM, or CEH credentials strengthen your specialty occupation case, but they need to align with the SOC code your employer files under. Check your target role's SOC code against O*NET to confirm the degree requirement holds.
Target employers with cap-exempt petition history
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated entities can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery cap. Security operations roles at these organizations let you bypass the April registration window entirely.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter by security operations roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active LCA filing histories. This cuts out the guesswork of cold-applying to companies that haven't sponsored this job category before.
Confirm the employer's prevailing wage tier before negotiating
DOL certifies LCAs at one of four prevailing wage levels for your SOC code and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level III or Level IV rates for security engineer roles in your metro before your offer conversation.
Document incident response scope for RFE readiness
USCIS sometimes issues Requests for Evidence questioning whether senior SOC roles constitute specialty occupations. A detailed job description tying your specific duties to a cybersecurity degree field strengthens the employer's petition from the start.
H-1B Visa Senior Security Operations Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Security Operations Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS evaluates specialty occupation status by confirming the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Senior SOC engineer positions typically require a degree in computer science, information security, or a closely related discipline, and the technical depth of the role supports that classification. Employers document this in the LCA and I-129 petition.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Security Operations Engineers?
Large technology firms, defense contractors, financial institutions, and cloud infrastructure companies account for most H-1B sponsorships in this role category. Employers with dedicated security operations centers file LCAs regularly for these positions. Use Migrate Mate to filter by verified H-1B filing history for security operations roles before you apply, so you're targeting employers with an actual track record.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my chances in a senior security role?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions enter the annual lottery, with 65,000 regular-cap slots and 20,000 additional slots for U.S. master's degree holders. Registrations are selected randomly by USCIS in March. Senior-level security roles don't receive preferential lottery treatment, but cap-exempt employers such as universities and nonprofit research organizations can file outside the cap entirely.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new security operations employer mid-status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. Your new employer files an I-129 transfer petition with USCIS, and you can begin work as soon as it's receipted, without waiting for approval. The new LCA must cover your work location and reflect the prevailing wage for the SOC code tied to your senior security operations duties.
What credentials strengthen an H-1B petition for a Senior Security Operations Engineer?
Industry certifications like CISSP, CISM, or GIAC credentials don't substitute for a bachelor's degree under H-1B rules, but they reinforce the specialty occupation argument when paired with a relevant degree. If your degree is in a tangentially related field, certifications and prior work history in security operations help the employer's attorney build a stronger specialty occupation nexus in the I-129.
