Document your degree's field alignment
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation status for consulting roles. Pull your official transcripts and map your coursework to supply chain functions like demand planning, procurement, or logistics to build a strong degree-job nexus before you start applying.
Target LCA-active employers on Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to filter Supply Chain Consultant roles by employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing history. This cuts out companies that express interest in sponsorship but have never filed, saving you weeks of misdirected effort.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your job location and experience level. Look up the wage level for your SOC code and metro area in the OFLC Wage Search before your offer call so you can negotiate from an informed baseline.
Identify cap-exempt employers in your sector
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government-affiliated entities are exempt from the annual H-1B cap, so they can file year-round without lottery risk. Supply chain and operations consulting roles exist at these institutions, particularly in healthcare systems and research universities.
Request premium processing when timelines are tight
If your OPT end date or cap-gap window is approaching, ask your prospective employer to file with premium processing. USCIS adjudicates premium petitions within 15 business days, which is critical when you're managing a hard status deadline.
Prepare an O*NET-aligned job duties letter
Ask your future employer to draft your offer letter with duties that mirror the O*NET occupational profile for Supply Chain Consultants. USCIS officers compare petition job descriptions against O*NET to verify specialty occupation status, so alignment reduces RFE risk.
H-1B Visa Supply Chain Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Supply Chain Consultant role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as supply chain management, industrial engineering, operations research, or business analytics. The key is that your employer's job posting and internal requirements must specify a degree in a specific discipline, not just any bachelor's degree. Generic degree requirements can trigger a Request for Evidence from USCIS.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Supply Chain Consultants?
Large consulting firms, third-party logistics companies, automotive manufacturers, and major retail corporations file H-1B petitions for Supply Chain Consultants regularly. Healthcare systems and technology companies with complex supply chains also sponsor this role. You can browse employers with active H-1B filing histories for this role on Migrate Mate before reaching out to recruiters.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I switch consulting firms?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules you can start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed with USCIS, provided your previous H-1B was approved and you haven't accrued unauthorized status. Your new employer files an I-129 on your behalf. Consulting roles with similar duty sets generally support a clean transfer without needing a new specialty occupation determination.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement apply to Supply Chain Consultant positions?
Your employer must pay you at least the prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and work location before USCIS will certify the LCA. Supply chain roles can fall under multiple SOC codes depending on duties, and the wage floor shifts by wage level, from entry to fully competent. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the applicable wage level for your city before evaluating an offer.
What happens to my H-1B status if my consulting project ends and I'm on the bench?
Your employer must continue paying you the full LCA wage during any non-productive period that's their responsibility, such as a project gap between client engagements. If your employer stops paying and terminates your employment, your H-1B status ends and you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, transfer to a new employer, or change status. Unpaid bench time without employer-initiated non-productive status is a compliance violation.
