- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify root causes, exercise sound judgment, and recommend practical solutions.
- Experience supporting or managing legal technology platforms, including CLM or other workflow-based systems.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and drive progress across teams, regions, and time zones.
- Practical understanding of how automation and AI can be applied within legal operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working within a legal department or another regulated, process-driven environment.

Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to legal operations work. A JD, paralegal studies, or business degree with a legal concentration strengthens your case. A general management degree alone may trigger an RFE.
Search LCA filings by SOC code
Legal Operations Manager roles are filed under varying SOC codes depending on the employer. Use the OFLC Wage Search to identify which companies have certified LCAs for legal operations or legal management titles before applying.
Target law firms and corporate legal departments separately
Law firms and in-house legal teams have different H-1B filing cultures. Corporate legal departments at tech, finance, and healthcare companies sponsor more consistently. Prioritize employers with a dedicated legal ops function, not just a general counsel office.
Use Migrate Mate to filter H-1B sponsoring employers
Filter by legal operations roles on Migrate Mate to see employers with verified DOL LCA filing history. This cuts out companies that list the title but have never filed for the position, saving time on applications unlikely to lead to sponsorship.
Negotiate the timing of your I-129 filing
H-1B cap-subject filings open in April for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, confirm your employer will file during the registration window and ask about cap-gap coverage if your EAD expires before October 1.
Document your legal technology experience specifically
USCIS evaluates whether your role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Highlight experience with e-billing platforms, contract lifecycle management tools, or matter management systems. Generic management duties without legal-specific tech scope weaken the specialty occupation argument.
H-1B Visa Legal Operations Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Legal Operations Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as law, business administration, or information systems. Roles that blend legal process management with technology implementation or compliance functions generally meet the specialty occupation standard. Employers strengthen the petition by documenting degree requirements in the job description and LCA before filing with USCIS.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Legal Operations Manager positions?
Corporate legal departments at large technology, financial services, and healthcare companies are the most consistent sponsors for this role. Law firms sponsor less frequently because their revenue model makes H-1B costs harder to absorb. Use Migrate Mate to find employers with active LCA filings specifically for legal operations or legal management titles, which signals genuine sponsorship history rather than intent.
What SOC code do employers use when filing an LCA for a Legal Operations Manager?
Employers typically file under SOC 11-1021 (General and Operations Managers) or 23-1011 (Lawyers), depending on how they classify the role internally. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage level USCIS and DOL apply to the position. Check the OFLC Wage Search to see which code comparable employers have used and what wage levels have been certified for similar titles in your target metro area.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Legal Operations Manager role mid-year?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you transfer to a new employer after your petition has been pending or approved for 180 days, as long as the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. Your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition, and you can start work as soon as USCIS receives it, without waiting for approval.
Does a JD make it easier to get H-1B sponsorship for a Legal Operations role?
A JD strengthens the specialty occupation argument significantly because it directly maps to the legal function of the role. USCIS is less likely to issue an RFE when the degree-to-job relationship is clear. That said, a JD is not required if your employer can document that a bachelor's in business, compliance, or information systems is the standard entry requirement for the position at their organization.
