Verify your degree field matches
Purchasing Manager is a specialty occupation, but USCIS scrutinizes degree relevance. A degree in supply chain management, business administration, or operations strengthens your petition. A general arts degree with no coursework connection to procurement will draw an RFE.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating
Look up the Level I through Level IV wage for Purchasing Managers in your target metro using the OFLC Wage Search. Your offered salary must meet or exceed the applicable level, and knowing the tiers helps you negotiate without jeopardizing LCA compliance.
Target employers with PERM filing history
Manufacturing, aerospace, and large retail companies regularly sponsor Purchasing Managers through both H-1B and PERM. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified LCA filings specifically for procurement and supply chain roles, not just general H-1B activity.
Ask about premium processing at the offer stage
Standard H-1B adjudication can take several months, which matters if you're starting a new role. Confirm whether your prospective employer will elect premium processing so your petition is adjudicated within 15 business days, per USCIS guidelines.
Document your supply chain specialization clearly
Purchasing Manager roles that blend general management duties weaken the specialty occupation argument. Your resume and employer support letter should emphasize category management, supplier negotiation, and sourcing strategy rather than broadly listing operational responsibilities.
Review the O*NET profile before your interview
The O*NET occupation profile for Purchasing Managers outlines the core tasks and required knowledge USCIS and DOL use to evaluate specialty occupation status. Framing your experience around those descriptors makes your petition and interview responses more cohesive.

Find Purchasing Manager JobsPurchasing Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Purchasing Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as supply chain management, business administration, or operations. USCIS has issued RFEs on Purchasing Manager petitions where the job description included generalist duties that could be performed without a specific degree, so the employer's job posting and support letter need to tie educational requirements directly to the role's core functions.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for Purchasing Manager positions?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing history for Purchasing Manager and related supply chain roles, so you can see which companies have actually sponsored these positions rather than relying on employer self-reporting. Targeting companies with consistent LCA activity in your industry sector increases your chances of finding a genuine sponsorship pathway.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer goes through a merger or acquisition?
If your employer is acquired and the new entity is a successor in interest, your H-1B can carry over without refiling, but only if the terms and conditions of your employment remain the same. If your job duties, title, or work location change substantially after the acquisition, your employer may need to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before those changes take effect.
Can I move to a different employer as a Purchasing Manager while on H-1B?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. If your current H-1B has been approved and you've been in valid H-1B status, a new employer can file a transfer petition and you can start working for them as soon as the receipt notice is issued, without waiting for approval. The new role must also qualify as a specialty occupation and meet prevailing wage requirements.
Which industries most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Purchasing Managers?
Manufacturing, aerospace and defense, semiconductor and electronics, retail and consumer goods, and pharmaceutical companies file LCAs for Purchasing Manager roles with regularity because their procurement functions are complex enough to require specialized degrees. Technology companies with large hardware or infrastructure divisions also appear frequently in DOL disclosure data for this occupation.
