Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree field to directly relate to quality assurance work. A degree in industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or quality management strengthens your petition. Degrees in unrelated fields can trigger an RFE and stall your timeline.
Target manufacturers enrolled in E-Verify
STEM OPT employers must be E-Verify participants, and many H-1B sponsors in manufacturing already enroll voluntarily. Filtering for E-Verify-enrolled facilities in your job search narrows your list to employers with established compliance infrastructure and active sponsorship history.
Look up prevailing wages before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify your wage meets the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and location. Run your job title and metro area through OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you know the wage floor your employer is already legally required to meet.
Search Migrate Mate for verified H-1B sponsors
Not every manufacturer that posts Quality Technician roles has H-1B filing history. Use Migrate Mate to filter job listings by employers with confirmed DOL Labor Condition Application filings, so you apply only where sponsorship is already established practice.
Confirm the job description specifies degree requirements
Quality Technician postings vary widely. Roles that list a degree as 'preferred' rather than 'required' can fail the specialty occupation test at USCIS. Before accepting an offer, ask the employer to confirm the position description will specify a bachelor's degree as a minimum requirement.
File premium processing if your start date is fixed
Standard H-1B adjudication can run several months after October 1. If your employer's production schedule or project start date is firm, request premium processing so USCIS adjudicates within 15 business days. Your employer pays the fee, but you need to raise it during offer negotiation.
H-1B Visa Quality Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Quality Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS evaluates whether the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Quality Technician jobs at aerospace, medical device, and pharmaceutical manufacturers typically qualify because those industries attach degree requirements to the role by industry norm. Roles at general manufacturers with no degree requirement in the job description are harder to approve.
Which industries most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Quality Technicians?
Aerospace and defense, medical device manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, and automotive components manufacturers are the most active H-1B sponsors for Quality Technician roles. These sectors operate under FDA, FAA, or ISO regulatory frameworks that create demand for degreed quality professionals. You can browse open positions at verified sponsors on Migrate Mate, which filters listings by confirmed H-1B filing history.
What SOC code does USCIS and DOL use for Quality Technician roles?
Quality Technician positions are most commonly filed under SOC code 17-3026 (Industrial Engineering Technologists and Technicians) or 51-9061 (Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers), depending on the actual duties. The SOC code your employer selects affects the prevailing wage tier on the LCA. Review the O*NET profile for both codes to confirm which better matches your responsibilities before your employer files.
Can my employer sponsor my H-1B if I'm currently on OPT as a Quality Technician?
Yes. Your employer files the H-1B petition before April 1 for an October 1 start, and your OPT EAD covers you until then. If your OPT expires before October 1 and you're selected in the lottery, the cap-gap rule automatically extends your work authorization. Confirm your OPT end date and your employer's H-1B filing timeline with USCIS well before the registration window opens in March.
How do I find out if a Quality Technician employer has sponsored H-1B visas before?
DOL publishes LCA disclosure data showing every employer that has filed a certified labor condition application, including job title, wage level, and worksite location. You can cross-reference this data or use Migrate Mate, which surfaces verified H-1B filing history directly in job listings so you can apply to manufacturers with an established sponsorship track record rather than asking cold.
