Verify your role meets specialty occupation
Manufacturing Laborer positions vary widely. Check the O*NET occupation profile for your specific duties to confirm the role requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related field, which is the baseline USCIS specialty occupation standard.
Pull DOL LCA records before applying
Search Migrate Mate to filter manufacturing employers by verified H-1B Labor Condition Application history. Facilities that have filed LCAs for production or manufacturing roles in the past two years are the ones most likely to sponsor again.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment during outreach
STEM OPT extensions require E-Verify enrollment, and it's also a strong proxy for an employer's immigration infrastructure. Ask HR whether the facility is E-Verify enrolled before investing time in an application.
Request prevailing wage documentation early
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I and Level II wage for your SOC code before negotiating, so you know the floor.
Understand the LCA covers your specific worksite
If you rotate between production facilities or get reassigned to a different plant, your employer may need to file a new or amended LCA. Confirm whether your offer letter ties you to a single location or allows multi-site placements.
Time your offer relative to the H-1B cap
H-1B cap-subject petitions have an April 1 filing window for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, build backward from your OPT expiration to ensure your employer can file during the correct registration period without a work authorization gap.
H-1B Visa Manufacturing Laborer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Manufacturing Laborer jobs qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Some do, but not automatically. USCIS requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning it must normally require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Manufacturing Laborer roles that involve specialized technical knowledge, quality systems, or advanced production processes are more likely to qualify than general assembly positions.
How do I find manufacturing employers who have sponsored H-1B workers before?
Migrate Mate lets you filter employers by verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, so you can see which manufacturing facilities have actively sponsored H-1B workers for production and operations roles. Targeting employers with a documented filing history significantly reduces the risk of an employer who isn't familiar with the H-1B process.
What happens if my manufacturing employer has multiple plant locations?
Each worksite where you'll perform H-1B work must be covered by a certified LCA. If your role involves rotating between facilities or you get transferred to a different plant, your employer needs to file an amended or new LCA for the additional location. Clarify your work location before the petition is filed to avoid compliance issues.
Can my employer start my H-1B while I'm still on OPT?
Yes, and timing this correctly is critical. Your employer files an H-1B registration in March, USCIS selects petitions in the lottery, and if selected the petition is filed for an October 1 start date. If your OPT expires before October 1, the cap-gap rule can extend your work authorization through September 30 while the petition is pending.
Does the prevailing wage requirement affect manufacturing job offers?
It does. Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation code and the county where you'll work before USCIS will approve the petition. You can verify the required wage yourself using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer, which tells you whether the salary being offered meets the legal floor for your role and location.
