Align your degree to the SOC code
EHS Specialists are typically classified under SOC 17-2081 or 29-9011. Confirm your degree field matches the specialty occupation definition USCIS uses for your target SOC code before applying, or RFEs become likely.
Target industries with mandatory compliance roles
Manufacturing, chemical processing, utilities, and large construction firms must employ EHS Specialists to meet OSHA and EPA requirements. These employers sponsor H-1B visas because the role isn't discretionary, regulatory exposure makes it a business necessity.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Pull up LCA filing history filtered to EHS Specialist job titles on Migrate Mate before applying. You'll see which employers have actually sponsored the role, not just which ones list it as a benefit in job postings.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV prevailing wage for your target metro area. Your employer's LCA must certify at least that wage, so knowing it upfront prevents offers that can't clear the DOL filing.
Verify your certifications support the specialty occupation argument
CSP, CIH, or CHMM credentials strengthen the specialty occupation petition, but they don't replace a qualifying degree. If your degree is in a tangentially related field, your employer's attorney should address the nexus explicitly in the I-129 support letter.
Clarify cap-exempt status before your employer files
If you're moving between H-1B employers, you may qualify for a cap-exempt transfer if you've already been counted against the cap. Confirm this with your new employer during the offer stage so they don't plan around a lottery slot you don't need.

Find EHS Specialist JobsEHS Specialist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an EHS Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in environmental science, industrial hygiene, occupational health, or a closely related field. Generic safety coordinator roles with no degree requirement can fail the specialty occupation test. The job description must specify the degree requirement, and your employer's I-129 petition should document why the role demands that level of education.
Which industries are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for EHS Specialists?
Manufacturers, chemical plants, utilities, oil and gas operators, and large general contractors sponsor most frequently because regulatory compliance is non-negotiable in those sectors. Healthcare systems and pharmaceutical companies also run active programs. Migrate Mate lets you filter by employer and job title to see which companies have a verified LCA filing history for EHS roles specifically.
How does prevailing wage work for an H-1B EHS Specialist position?
Your employer must certify on the Labor Condition Application that they'll pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your job title, experience level, and work location. EHS Specialists fall under different SOC codes depending on the role, and prevailing wages vary significantly by metro area. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the applicable wage before you finalize your offer.
Can my employer file an H-1B for me if I only have an associate degree plus certifications like CSP or CIH?
This is a common point of failure. USCIS requires a U.S. bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent as a baseline. Professional certifications like CSP or CIH carry weight in demonstrating expertise, but they don't satisfy the degree requirement on their own. If you hold a two-year degree, you'd need substantial progressive experience evaluated as equivalent to a four-year degree through a credential evaluation.
What happens to my H-1B status if my EHS Specialist position is eliminated during a layoff?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new sponsoring employer, change to another valid status, or depart the U.S. Your new employer can file an H-1B transfer petition during that window, and your work authorization continues once the petition is received by USCIS. Acting quickly matters because the 60-day window doesn't pause.
