Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the Maintenance Supervisor role. An engineering or facilities management degree strengthens your case. A general business degree alone often triggers an RFE, so document how your coursework applies to the specific job duties.
Target industries with consistent LCA filings
Manufacturing plants, hospital systems, and large commercial property management firms file LCAs for Maintenance Supervisors far more often than retail or hospitality employers. Focus your search on these sectors to find employers with an established H-1B sponsorship process already in place.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter your job search on Migrate Mate by occupation and employer sponsorship history. You'll see which companies have filed LCAs for Maintenance Supervisor or similar facilities roles, so you're not cold-applying to employers who've never navigated H-1B sponsorship.
Check prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your specific location and job level. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the correct SOC code before accepting an offer to confirm the salary offer satisfies DOL requirements.
Raise sponsorship early in the hiring process
Don't wait until the offer stage to confirm an employer will sponsor an H-1B. Maintenance Supervisor hiring managers often control facility budgets and may not know sponsorship is an option. Ask during the second interview whether the company has sponsored H-1B employees before.
Align your start date with the cap timeline
H-1B cap registrations open each March, and approved petitions have an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer in summer or fall, negotiate a conditional start that accounts for this timeline. Cap-exempt employers like nonprofits or universities can file anytime.
H-1B Visa Maintenance Supervisor: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Maintenance Supervisor role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
It depends on how the position is defined. USCIS evaluates whether the role normally requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field. A Maintenance Supervisor overseeing complex mechanical, electrical, or HVAC systems with engineering responsibilities can qualify. A general facilities role where any bachelor's degree satisfies the requirement is harder to defend. Your employer's job description must clearly tie the duties to a specific degree field.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Maintenance Supervisors?
Manufacturing companies, hospital networks, commercial real estate firms, and utilities are the most consistent sponsors for this role. These employers typically have HR infrastructure familiar with LCA filings and H-1B petitions. Migrate Mate lets you filter by employers with documented sponsorship history for facilities and maintenance roles, so you can target your applications where sponsorship is already an established practice.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm promoted from Maintenance Technician to Supervisor?
A significant change in job duties, title, or work location requires your employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before the change takes effect. Moving into a supervisory role typically changes your SOC code and may change your prevailing wage level, both of which trigger an amendment. Working in the new role before the amended petition is filed puts your status at risk.
Can my employer sponsor my H-1B if the job involves multiple worksites?
Yes, but the employer must file a separate LCA for each worksite location where you'll work for more than 40 hours total. Maintenance Supervisors who oversee facilities across multiple sites in different metropolitan areas are a common scenario where this applies. Each LCA must certify the prevailing wage for that specific location using the OFLC Wage Search, and your employer must post the LCA at each covered worksite.
How does the O*NET classification affect my H-1B petition?
USCIS and the DOL both reference O*NET occupation profiles when evaluating whether a role qualifies as a specialty occupation and to determine the appropriate prevailing wage level. The O*NET profile for Maintenance Supervisors specifies the typical education requirement and job zone, which your employer's attorney will use to build the specialty occupation argument. Reviewing the O*NET profile for your specific role before filing helps you anticipate potential RFE issues.
