Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
H-1B approval for Health Educator roles hinges on your degree field matching the job. A bachelor's in public health, community health, or health education satisfies the requirement. A general business or unrelated degree often triggers an RFE from USCIS.
Pull the prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for Health Educator roles in their metro area. Run the OFLC Wage Search using SOC code 21-1091 before your offer conversation so you know the wage floor your employer is legally bound to meet.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Hospitals, federally qualified health centers, and public university health departments file H-1B LCAs regularly for Health Educator positions. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified H-1B filing history for this occupation so you're not guessing at sponsorship willingness.
Get your CHES or MPH credential documented early
Certified Health Education Specialist credentials and master's degrees in public health strengthen specialty occupation arguments. Have your official transcripts and CHES certificate ready before an employer files, since USCIS may request them during adjudication.
Ask about cap-exempt employer eligibility
Health Educators employed directly by nonprofit hospitals affiliated with universities, or by research institutions, may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B petitions. This bypasses the lottery entirely. Confirm the employer's cap-exempt status with their HR or legal team before accepting an offer.
Align your job search with the H-1B filing calendar
USCIS opens H-1B registration in early March for an October 1 start date. Health Educator roles with October start dates need employer commitment by late February. Start targeting sponsoring employers at least five months before the filing window opens.
H-1B Visa Health Educator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Health Educator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the employer requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field like public health, health education, or a closely related discipline. The key is that the degree must be a normal minimum requirement for the position. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field are harder to defend as specialty occupations, and USCIS may issue an RFE asking the employer to justify the requirement.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Health Educator positions?
Hospitals and health systems, federally qualified health centers, public health departments, nonprofits focused on chronic disease prevention, and universities with campus health programs are the most common H-1B sponsors for Health Educators. Government contractors running community health initiatives also file. You can browse employers with verified H-1B filing history for this role on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B lottery affect Health Educator job seekers?
Unless your employer qualifies as cap-exempt, your petition enters the annual H-1B lottery. USCIS caps regular H-1B visas at 65,000 per year, with an additional 20,000 slots for U.S. master's degree holders. Registration opens in early March, and selection is random. If you're not selected, you can register again in the following year's lottery or pursue cap-exempt employers.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for Health Educator H-1B positions?
DOL requires employers to pay the prevailing wage for the Health Educator occupation in the geographic area where you'll work. This wage is tied to SOC code 21-1091 and varies by metro area and experience level. Employers certify this wage when they file the LCA before your H-1B petition. You can verify the applicable wage tier using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer stage.
Can a Health Educator on H-1B change employers mid-status?
Yes, H-1B portability under AC21 lets you transfer your H-1B to a new employer once your current petition has been approved and you've been in valid H-1B status. Your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition, and you can start working as soon as USCIS receives it, without waiting for approval. The new role must still qualify as a specialty occupation in public health or a related field.
