Verify your role qualifies as specialty occupation
Pull the O*NET profile for coaches and cross-reference your job duties against USCIS specialty occupation criteria. Division I head coaching and assistant roles with explicit degree requirements clear the bar more reliably than recreational or youth league positions.
Target NCAA Division I and professional programs
Search LCA filing history through the OFLC Wage Search to identify which athletic departments and professional franchises have sponsored H-1B coaches before. Prior filings signal an employer already understands the process and has legal infrastructure in place.
Build a credential file before negotiating offers
Assemble certified transcripts, coaching certifications, and any international credentials before you reach the offer stage. USCIS will scrutinize whether your degree field directly relates to the coaching role, so degree equivalency evaluations may be needed for non-U.S. qualifications.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Search Basketball Coach roles on Migrate Mate to filter for employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. This cuts out programs that will decline to sponsor and focuses your applications on athletic departments already set up to file.
Time your offer around the H-1B cap and fiscal year
Cap-subject H-1B petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date. If you're negotiating an offer in late spring or summer, confirm whether the employer qualifies as cap-exempt, since universities and affiliated nonprofits often are.
Negotiate employer responsibility for filing fees
DOL rules prohibit employers from passing most H-1B filing fees to you. Confirm in writing before signing that your employer will cover the I-129 petition fee and, if applicable, the ACWIA training fee. Premium processing is typically negotiable.

Find Basketball Coach JobsBasketball Coach H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Basketball Coach role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer structures the job description. USCIS requires the position to normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Head coaching and assistant coaching roles at NCAA Division I programs or professional organizations that mandate a degree in kinesiology, sports science, or exercise physiology are better positioned to meet this standard than generalist recreational coaching jobs.
Which types of employers typically sponsor H-1B visas for basketball coaches?
NCAA Division I universities, professional NBA G League affiliates, and large athletic management organizations are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for coaching roles. Many universities and their affiliated nonprofits are cap-exempt, meaning your petition can be filed year-round without waiting for the April lottery. You can browse employers with confirmed H-1B filing history for this role on Migrate Mate.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Basketball Coach H-1B petitions?
Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for the coaching occupation in the geographic area where you'll work. The employer's HR team or immigration attorney uses the OFLC Wage Search to determine the applicable wage level. Coaching roles at smaller programs may struggle to justify Level III or IV wages, so confirm the offered salary aligns with the certified LCA before the petition is filed.
Can a basketball coach on H-1B status work for multiple teams or programs simultaneously?
Yes, but each concurrent employer must file a separate H-1B petition. If you're a full-time coach at a university and take on a part-time role with a separate organization, that second employer needs its own approved petition before you start work. USCIS treats each employer relationship independently, so there's no shortcut for concurrent positions.
What happens to my H-1B status if the program eliminates my coaching position mid-season?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new sponsoring employer, change to another nonimmigrant status, or depart the country. If a new employer files an H-1B transfer petition within that 60-day window, you can begin working for the new employer as soon as the petition is received by USCIS under portability rules. Act quickly, since the grace period does not restart if you switch employers.
