INTRODUCTION
The School of Business and Economics (SBE) at Brandeis University seeks an instructor for BUS/FIN 241a: Machine Learning and Data Analysis for Business and Finance, a 4-credit course in the Fall 2026 semester. This course is structured as a general topics course on machine learning tools, and their implementation through languages such as Python, and the Python packages, Scikit Learn, Keras, TensorFlow, and the Natural Language Toolkit (NLT). The course is oriented heavily to applications in business and finance, giving students the tools needed to survive in the modern data analytics space. It is not intended as a deep theoretical approach to machine learning. Students will finish the class with a basic understanding of how to execute predictive analytic algorithms, as well as rigorously test their performance through various projects. The class meets for 1.5-hours, twice a week in the Fall semester.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with minimum qualification of a Master’s degree along with relevant professional qualifications and experience with machine learning and data science will be given preference. Candidates with prior teaching experience of relevant/related courses will also be given preference. Interested individuals should submit a cover letter, CV and names and contact information for two references. The deadline for first consideration is July 31, 2026.
COMPENSATION
- Salary range: $10,000 - $12,000, depending on qualifications.
This appointment is to a position that is in a collective bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local 509.
Pay Range Disclosure
The University's pay ranges represent a good faith estimate of what Brandeis reasonably expects to pay for a position at the time of posting. The pay offered to a selected candidate during hiring will be based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience and education/training, internal peer equity, and applicable legal requirements.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an Adjunct Professor
Confirm your institution's cap-exempt status
Many universities and nonprofit colleges qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, bypassing the annual lottery entirely. Ask HR directly whether the institution files under INA 214(c)(1) exemptions before accepting an adjunct offer.
Match your degree field to your teaching discipline
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your highest degree and the courses you'll teach. If you hold an MBA but are hired to teach marketing, document how the degree field maps to the specific course catalog descriptions.
Check prevailing wage using OFLC Wage Search
Adjunct pay is often structured as per-course stipends, not annual salaries. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the annualized prevailing wage for your SOC code and geographic area before your LCA is filed.
Target institutions with active LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Adjunct Professor postings by employers with verified LCA filing history, so you're applying to institutions that have already navigated H-1B sponsorship for this role type.
Request I-129 filing before your OPT or prior status expires
Adjunct contracts often start just weeks before a semester begins, leaving little processing time. Confirm your employer will file the I-129 at least 90 days before your intended start date to avoid a gap in work authorization.
Document part-time hours carefully if teaching multiple courses
H-1B requires the role to constitute a specialty occupation regardless of hours. If you're teaching across two departments or institutions, each employer may need a separate H-1B petition, which USCIS evaluates independently.
H-1B Visa Adjunct Professor: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Adjunct Professor positions qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B purposes?
Yes, Adjunct Professor roles generally qualify as specialty occupations because they require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific academic field directly related to the courses taught. USCIS evaluates the connection between your credential and your teaching assignment, so the tighter that alignment, the stronger the petition. Generic teaching roles without a clear degree requirement can face scrutiny.
Can a college sponsor an H-1B for an adjunct without going through the lottery?
Many colleges and universities qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers under federal law, which means they can file petitions at any time without competing in the annual April lottery. This applies to institutions of higher education and affiliated nonprofit entities. You should confirm cap-exempt status directly with your prospective employer's HR or legal team before relying on this pathway.
How do I find Adjunct Professor employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate shows Adjunct Professor job listings filtered by employers with verified LCA filing history, which reflects actual H-1B sponsorship activity. This lets you focus your applications on institutions that have already sponsored the role type rather than negotiating sponsorship from scratch with unfamiliar HR departments.
How is prevailing wage calculated for adjunct roles paid per course?
Adjunct per-course stipends must be converted to an annualized equivalent that meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for the relevant SOC code and work location. The DOL uses the OFLC Wage Search to determine this figure. If the annualized value of your course load falls below the prevailing wage threshold, your employer must increase your compensation before the LCA can be certified.
Can I hold H-1B status while teaching adjunct at more than one institution?
Yes, but each employer must file a separate H-1B petition. If you teach at a second institution concurrently, that college must also sponsor you and file its own I-129 with USCIS. Your primary sponsor's petition doesn't cover outside teaching engagements. Failing to get a concurrent H-1B for additional employers means any outside teaching is unauthorized work.
