Verify your credential meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree to directly relate to the HIM role. An RHIA credential from AHIMA strengthens your petition by showing the field has standardized educational requirements, reducing RFE risk on specialty occupation grounds.
Search LCA filings by SOC code
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers who have filed LCAs under HIM-specific SOC codes. This shows you which hospital systems and health IT companies have active sponsorship history for your exact role type, not just general tech or healthcare.
Target health systems over staffing agencies
Hospital networks and integrated health systems typically hold I-129 petitions in-house, giving you more stability than third-party staffing. Confirm the employer is the direct petitioner before accepting an offer involving H-1B sponsorship.
Benchmark your wage against OFLC Wage Search
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Pull the current figures from OFLC Wage Search before negotiations so you know the certified floor, not just market rate.
Clarify remote work before your LCA is filed
If your HIM role is fully or partially remote, your employer must file LCA amendments for each work location, including your home address. Nail down the work arrangement in writing before filing starts to avoid compliance gaps later.
Account for cap-gap if transitioning from OPT
If you're on OPT when your H-1B petition is filed, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through September 30. Confirm your employer submits the petition before your OPT expires so there's no gap in your authorization to work HIM roles.
H-1B Visa Health Information Management: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Health Information Management qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in health information management, health informatics, or a closely related field. Positions like HIM director, clinical data analyst, or health informatics specialist typically qualify. Roles requiring only a general business or associate degree may face USCIS scrutiny, so the job description must explicitly state the degree requirement.
Which employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for HIM roles?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, and health IT vendors are the most active H-1B sponsors for Health Information Management positions. Epic, Cerner, and major health networks file LCAs regularly for coding, informatics, and data governance roles. You can browse verified H-1B sponsoring employers in HIM on Migrate Mate, filtered by LCA filing history for your specific occupation.
Does an RHIA or RHIT certification help my H-1B petition?
An RHIA from AHIMA directly supports the specialty occupation argument because it demonstrates the field has standardized, degree-level educational requirements recognized by a national credentialing body. USCIS adjudicators are more likely to accept the specialty occupation classification when the petitioner can point to an industry-recognized credential tied to a specific bachelor's degree program.
How does remote work affect my H-1B if I work in HIM?
Each physical work location where you perform services must have its own certified LCA. If you work remotely from home, your home address counts as a worksite. Your employer must file an amended LCA and, in some cases, an amended I-129 before you begin working at that location. Failing to update the LCA for a new worksite is a DOL compliance violation.
What happens to my H-1B status if my HIM job is eliminated?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new H-1B sponsor, change to another valid status, or depart the U.S. During this window, you're not authorized to work. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before the grace period expires. USCIS allows you to start the new HIM role once the petition is filed, under portability rules.
