Align your resume to SOC codes
IT Operations Specialist roles map to specific SOC codes that determine your H-1B prevailing wage level. Review your resume to reflect the duties tied to your target SOC code before applying, so your experience matches what the employer certifies on the LCA.
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to relate directly to the IT operations role. A general business degree can trigger an RFE. A transcript showing coursework in networking, systems administration, or information technology strengthens your petition before the employer files.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter IT Operations Specialist roles by employers who have filed LCAs for this specific occupation, so you're applying to companies already familiar with the H-1B process for your job title rather than educating a first-time sponsor.
Ask about cap-exempt employer eligibility early
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and certain government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning they can file your H-1B petition outside the annual lottery window. If you're open to these sectors, identify cap-exempt employers before you receive offers to avoid lottery timing conflicts.
Confirm the offered wage meets the prevailing wage
Before signing an offer, cross-reference the role's location and job duties against the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the salary meets at least the Level I or Level II prevailing wage. An offer below the prevailing wage will fail DOL certification and delay your petition.
Clarify who pays which H-1B fees upfront
USCIS prohibits employees from paying certain H-1B filing fees, but premium processing costs are often negotiable. Confirm in writing which fees the employer covers before you accept an offer, since undisclosed fee-shifting arrangements can complicate your petition and create compliance issues.

Find IT Operations Specialist JobsIT Operations Specialist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Operations Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, information systems, or information technology. Roles that accept any degree regardless of field can draw an RFE from USCIS. Employers strengthen the petition by documenting why a specific technical degree is necessary for the day-to-day duties of the role.
Which employers regularly sponsor H-1B visas for IT Operations Specialists?
Enterprises in financial services, healthcare systems, and large technology firms file LCAs for IT operations roles most consistently, as their infrastructure teams require ongoing headcount. You can browse verified sponsoring employers for this specific job title on Migrate Mate, which filters listings by DOL Labor Condition Application filing history so you see only active sponsors.
How does the H-1B lottery affect IT Operations Specialists at for-profit employers?
If your employer is a for-profit company without a cap-exempt affiliation, your petition enters the annual H-1B lottery, which opens in March for an October 1 start date. USCIS first draws from the 65,000 regular cap, with 20,000 additional slots reserved for U.S. master's degree holders. Not being selected means waiting until the next registration cycle.
What prevailing wage level should an IT Operations Specialist expect for H-1B purposes?
Prevailing wage levels depend on your job duties, the specific SOC code your employer assigns, and the work location. Entry-level positions typically fall at Level I or II under DOL's wage determination framework. You can look up current prevailing wages for your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating an offer to confirm the salary your employer proposes will clear DOL certification.
Can an IT Operations Specialist transfer their H-1B to a new employer mid-status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as they file a non-frivolous transfer petition, without waiting for USCIS approval, provided you're in valid H-1B status and not in your first 60 days of employment. Your new employer must file a new I-129 and a certified LCA covering the new role and location before you start.
