Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires a directly related degree for H-1B approval. A master's in library science or information studies satisfies this. A general education degree without library coursework may trigger a Request for Evidence, so document the connection explicitly.
Target university libraries over school districts
Public universities are often cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning you can start any time of year without waiting for the lottery. K-12 districts are cap-subject, so your October 1 start date must align with their hiring calendar.
Check LCA filing history before applying
Use Migrate Mate to filter Library Media Specialist roles by employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application history, so you spend time on districts and institutions that have actually sponsored this role before.
Request state licensure details from HR early
Many states require a school library media specialist credential separate from your academic degree. Confirm whether your employer can begin the H-1B filing while your state license application is pending, or whether approval is a prerequisite.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier with OFLC Wage Search
Before accepting an offer, look up the wage level for your SOC code and work location using OFLC Wage Search. Your offered salary must meet at least Level I to support a valid LCA, and underpaying is a compliance violation DOL audits.
Plan the petition timeline around the academic year
H-1B petitions for cap-subject school library positions must be filed in April for an October 1 start. If you're hired mid-year, your employer may need to wait for the next filing window, so negotiate a delayed start date in your offer letter.

Find Library Media Specialist JobsLibrary Media Specialist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Library Media Specialist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, when the position requires a master's degree in library science, information studies, or a closely related field. USCIS evaluates whether a bachelor's or higher degree in a specific discipline is the normal minimum for the role. Most professional library positions at K-12 institutions and universities meet this threshold, but the job description must reflect the degree requirement clearly.
Do public school districts sponsor H-1B visas for library positions?
Some do, but it's less common than in higher education. Public K-12 districts are cap-subject employers, meaning your petition competes in the annual lottery and you can only begin work on October 1. Districts with recurring specialist shortages, particularly in underserved areas, are more likely to have sponsorship infrastructure. Use Migrate Mate to identify districts with active H-1B filing history for this role.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new library employer mid-year?
Yes, H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval. For library roles, your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and submit the I-129 petition to USCIS. The new position must also qualify as a specialty occupation, so the job description and degree requirement must match.
Do I need a state library media license before my employer files the H-1B?
It depends on the state and employer. Some states require licensure before you can work in a school library, which means the H-1B petition may need to show a valid or pending credential. Others accept a conditional offer while licensure is in process. Confirm the specific state requirement with your employer's HR team before the petition is filed to avoid a denial or Request for Evidence.
How do I find Library Media Specialist employers who sponsor H-1B visas?
The most reliable method is searching DOL Labor Condition Application disclosure data to see which institutions have filed for this specific occupation. Migrate Mate surfaces that filing history by employer and role, so you can focus your search on universities, school districts, and library systems that have sponsored H-1B petitions for Library Media Specialists rather than applying broadly and asking about sponsorship after the fact.
