Align your credentials to SOC code 13-1082
Project Management Consultants are classified under SOC code 13-1082 in the O*NET system. Confirm your degree field matches this classification before applying, mismatched credentials are the leading cause of specialty occupation RFEs for consulting roles.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Use OFLC Wage Search to filter employers who have certified LCAs for management consulting roles. Employers with repeated filings have an established H-1B workflow, which reduces processing delays and last-minute petition errors on your behalf.
Find verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Search Project Management Consultant roles on Migrate Mate to surface employers with confirmed H-1B filing history. Filtering by visa sponsorship upfront saves weeks spent pursuing employers who informally discourage sponsorship during the offer stage.
Request premium processing before your start date
USCIS premium processing guarantees a decision within 15 business days. For consulting roles with defined project start dates, standard processing timelines can push your first day past the contract window, so ask your employer to elect premium during petition filing.
Clarify your prevailing wage tier during negotiations
DOL assigns Project Management Consultants to one of four wage levels based on experience and supervisory responsibility. Before signing an offer, verify which level your employer filed under using OFLC Wage Search, a Level I filing for a senior-scope role can create compliance problems at renewal.
Document client site work in your petition cover letter
Project Management Consultants often work at client sites, which USCIS scrutinizes under itinerary requirements for consulting petitions. Your petition cover letter must list anticipated work locations and confirm the specialty occupation requirement applies at each site.
H-1B Visa Project Management Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Management Consultant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as business administration, engineering, or information systems. Generic management consulting roles that accept any degree can be challenged by USCIS as not meeting the specialty occupation standard, so the job description must tie the degree requirement to the actual duties performed.
How does client-site consulting work affect my H-1B petition?
USCIS requires petitions for consulting roles to include an itinerary identifying work locations when assignments span multiple client sites. Your employer should file an amended petition if you're placed at a new client site outside the metropolitan statistical area listed in the original LCA. Missing this step is one of the more common compliance gaps for consultants on H-1B status.
What happens to my H-1B status if my consulting engagement ends early?
If your employment ends before your H-1B validity period expires, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new employer, transfer your H-1B, or depart the U.S. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before the grace period ends. Consulting contracts ending early are common, so understanding this window before accepting a project-based role matters.
Can I work as an independent Project Management Consultant on an H-1B?
No. H-1B status requires a U.S. employer to file and maintain your petition. You can't self-petition or work as a sole proprietor. If you want to consult independently, you'd need a different immigration pathway. On H-1B, you must remain in a valid employer-employee relationship with the sponsoring company throughout your authorized period.
How do I find Project Management Consultant employers who sponsor H-1B visas?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters Project Management Consultant roles by verified H-1B sponsorship history drawn from DOL LCA disclosure data. Targeting employers with an established H-1B filing track record for consulting roles is more reliable than asking HR teams who may not know their company's sponsorship policy until late in the hiring process.
