Verify your degree maps to the role
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation petitions when the degree field doesn't directly match the job. A degree in electrical engineering or power systems engineering gives you the strongest foundation. Mechanical or general engineering degrees may require supplemental documentation.
Target utilities and grid infrastructure employers
Investor-owned utilities, independent power producers, and grid software firms file H-1B petitions for Senior Power Systems Engineers at higher rates than general engineering firms. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by LCA filing history for this specific occupation code.
Pull prevailing wage data before your offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level III and Level IV wages for SOC 17-2071 in your target metro area. Knowing the prevailing wage before negotiations means you can spot whether an employer's offer meets DOL certification requirements.
Confirm your role qualifies under O*NET
The O*NET profile for Electrical Engineers lists the degree requirements and typical duties USCIS references when evaluating specialty occupation. If your job duties include load flow analysis, protection coordination, or grid modeling, document that alignment explicitly in your offer letter.
Ask about concurrent LCA and petition timing
Employers must obtain a certified LCA from DOL before filing the I-129 petition with USCIS. DOL LCA certification typically takes seven business days, but delays happen. Confirm your employer has started this step before you give notice at a current job.
Clarify cap-exempt status if changing employers
If you're transferring H-1B sponsorship from a cap-exempt institution like a university research lab to a private utility, you re-enter the cap subject pool. This timing affects your start date and may require waiting for the next April lottery cycle.

Find Senior Power Systems Engineer JobsSenior Power Systems Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Power Systems Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies Senior Power Systems Engineer positions under SOC code 17-2071 as specialty occupations because they require at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a directly related field. The role's technical depth, including duties like protection system design, load flow analysis, and grid stability modeling, supports the specialty occupation argument in the I-129 petition.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Power Systems Engineers?
Investor-owned utilities, independent system operators, defense contractors with grid infrastructure portfolios, and power systems software firms all file H-1B petitions for this role. You can browse employers with verified LCA filing history for Senior Power Systems Engineer positions on Migrate Mate, which filters by occupation code so you only see relevant sponsoring employers.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect my salary as an H-1B Senior Power Systems Engineer?
Your employer must pay you at least the prevailing wage for your occupation and location as certified on the LCA. For a senior-level role, that's typically a Level III or Level IV wage under DOL's four-tier structure. You can look up the applicable wage for SOC 17-2071 in your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before you receive or accept an offer.
Can I change employers while on H-1B sponsorship for a power systems role?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new I-129 petition, without waiting for USCIS approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've been maintaining valid status. The new employer must still complete a fresh LCA before filing, which typically takes seven business days through DOL.
What documentation strengthens an H-1B petition for a Senior Power Systems Engineer?
A detailed offer letter specifying technical duties tied to power systems engineering, a transcript confirming your degree is in electrical engineering or a closely related field, and any professional registrations such as a Professional Engineer license all strengthen the petition. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation demonstrating equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree is typically required by USCIS.
