Verify your degree aligns with sourcing roles
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the role. A supply chain, operations management, or business degree strengthens your specialty occupation case. An unrelated degree may require a credential evaluation showing equivalency through coursework.
Check prevailing wage before accepting offers
Run your target title and location through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing level for SOC 13-1081, so knowing the floor protects you from underpaid offers that could still pass DOL review.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager roles by verified LCA filing history, so you're applying to employers who have already committed to H-1B sponsorship for this specific occupation rather than guessing from job postings.
Ask about cap-exempt status during interviews
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government-affiliated organizations are cap-exempt, meaning they can file your H-1B petition outside the annual lottery. Strategic sourcing roles exist at these employers, and a cap-exempt filing removes lottery risk entirely.
Time your job search around the lottery registration window
USCIS opens H-1B electronic registration in March each year. Starting your sourcing job search in January gives you time to clear interviews, negotiate offers, and get your employer registered before the window closes, avoiding a full year's delay.
Document your strategic sourcing scope for the I-129 petition
USCIS scrutinizes whether sourcing roles genuinely require a specialized degree. Have your employer detail contract value thresholds, supplier complexity, and analytical responsibilities in the petition. Roles managing multi-million-dollar supplier portfolios are harder to classify as non-specialty occupations.
H-1B Visa Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer can show the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as supply chain management, business administration, or operations. Roles that involve complex supplier negotiations, spend analytics, and cross-functional procurement strategy generally satisfy USCIS's specialty occupation standard. Generic purchasing or buying roles with no degree requirement may face more scrutiny.
Which SOC code applies to Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager roles for H-1B purposes?
Most Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager positions are classified under SOC 13-1081, Logisticians, or SOC 11-3061, Purchasing Managers, depending on how the employer structures the role. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage tier DOL requires on the LCA. Review the O*NET profile for each code to confirm which better matches your actual responsibilities before your employer files.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B visas for sourcing roles?
Search Migrate Mate to browse Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager positions at employers with verified LCA filing history for this occupation. DOL discloses certified LCA data publicly, so it's possible to confirm which companies have sponsored similar roles, not just which ones list it as a possibility in a job posting.
Can my employer file my H-1B petition during the 60-day grace period after my previous job ends?
Yes. USCIS allows a 60-day grace period following involuntary termination from an H-1B role. A new employer can file a cap-subject or cap-exempt H-1B petition on your behalf during this window. If the new petition is filed before the grace period expires, you can begin work once it's approved or after a cap-gap period if applicable.
Does category of seniority affect H-1B approval odds for sourcing roles?
Seniority itself doesn't determine approval, but it affects how your employer documents the specialty occupation requirement. Senior-level sourcing roles with strategic scope, large spend ownership, and advanced analytical duties are easier to support with evidence than entry-level purchasing positions. USCIS may issue an RFE if the job duties appear routine or if the degree requirement isn't enforced in practice.
