Verify your role qualifies as specialty occupation
Developer Tools positions vary widely, SDK engineer and build systems developer almost always qualify, but generalist DevOps roles sometimes don't. Pull the O*NET profile for your exact job title and confirm the minimum education requirement is a bachelor's degree in a specific field.
Target employers with LCA history in your stack
Search DOL Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data filtered by SOC code 15-1252 or 15-1253 to find employers who've filed LCAs for Developer Tools and DevOps roles. Companies already familiar with this petition type move faster and make fewer errors.
Use Migrate Mate to filter by verified H-1B sponsors
On Migrate Mate, filter Developer Tools jobs by employers with confirmed LCA filing history so every application you submit goes to a company that has already navigated H-1B sponsorship for roles like yours.
Get your prevailing wage level right before negotiating
Run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before any offer conversation. Developer Tools roles at Level I and Level II wages are far easier for employers to certify quickly; a Level IV wage requires a stronger business justification on the LCA.
Clarify remote-work jurisdiction in your offer letter
If you'll work remotely across multiple states, the employer must file a separate LCA for each worksite state. Confirm this with your hiring manager before signing, an offer letter listing only headquarters does not cover you in a different state under H-1B rules.
Start your H-1B petition before cap registration closes
USCIS opens H-1B cap registration each March for a roughly two-week window. Developer Tools roles are cap-subject unless your employer is a university or nonprofit research organization. Missing the window means waiting a full year for the next registration cycle.
H-1B Visa Developer Tools: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Developer Tools jobs qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Most do, but the classification depends on the specific role. Positions like SDK engineer, build systems developer, and developer experience engineer require a bachelor's degree in computer science or a directly related field, which satisfies USCIS's specialty occupation definition. Roles framed as general IT support or operations may face closer scrutiny. Check the O*NET profile for your exact job title to confirm the degree requirement before applying.
How do I find Developer Tools employers who already sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate lets you browse Developer Tools jobs filtered by employers with verified LCA filing history, so you're only looking at companies that have already sponsored H-1B workers in similar roles. You can also cross-reference DOL disclosure data using the relevant SOC code to see which employers have filed the most LCAs for software and developer tooling positions in your target metro area.
Which SOC codes typically cover Developer Tools roles on an H-1B petition?
Developer Tools positions most commonly fall under SOC 15-1252 (Software Developers) or 15-1253 (Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers), depending on whether the role focuses on building tooling or validating it. DevOps-heavy roles sometimes map to 15-1244 (Network and Computer Systems Administrators), which carries different prevailing wage levels. Your employer's attorney will select the code, but knowing which one applies helps you benchmark the wage requirement using the OFLC Wage Search.
Can my H-1B cover remote work if my Developer Tools role is fully distributed?
Yes, but the employer must file a Labor Condition Application for every state where you regularly perform work, not just the company's headquarters state. For Developer Tools engineers who work from home, this means your home state must appear on a certified LCA before you begin work there. If you relocate to a new state, the employer must file an amended LCA and, in some cases, an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before the move takes effect.
Does a Developer Tools contractor role at a staffing agency complicate H-1B sponsorship?
It adds steps. Third-party placement arrangements require the employer of record to document that an employer-employee relationship exists and that the end client's worksite qualifies as a specialty occupation posting. USCIS scrutinizes these petitions closely and may issue a Request for Evidence asking for contracts, statements of work, and letters from the end client confirming the role's degree requirements. Direct-hire positions at product companies typically have a cleaner path through adjudication.
