Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree field to directly relate to site supervision duties. A degree in construction management, civil engineering, or architecture typically qualifies. A general business degree usually doesn't without supplementary documentation from your employer.
Check prevailing wages before negotiating your offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location before accepting an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above that level, so knowing the floor strengthens your negotiating position.
Target employers with active construction project pipelines
General contractors managing multi-year federal, infrastructure, or commercial builds are more likely to sponsor H-1B workers than subcontractors on short-cycle jobs. Project continuity gives employers a clear business case for the petition and reduces cap-gap risk for you.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified H-1B sponsors
Search Migrate Mate to identify construction and engineering firms with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history for site supervision roles. Filtering by employer filing history cuts out companies that haven't sponsored the role before and aren't likely to start.
Clarify worksite locations before your employer files the LCA
Site Supervisor roles involve variable project locations, and each worksite requires a posted LCA notice. Confirm with your employer whether the LCA will cover a fixed address or multiple project sites, because the DOL filing must reflect actual work locations.
Plan your timeline around the H-1B cap and premium processing
Cap-subject H-1B petitions can only start on October 1 each fiscal year. If your offer comes after the lottery, you'll wait up to 11 months to begin work. USCIS premium processing reduces adjudication to 15 business days and removes that uncertainty for the employer.

Find Site Supervisor JobsSite Supervisor H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Site Supervisor role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS requires the role to normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as construction management or civil engineering. A general site supervisor role with no degree requirement in the job posting won't qualify. Your employer needs to document why a specific degree is a standard requirement for the role at their company.
How do I find construction and engineering employers who actually sponsor H-1B visas?
Most construction employers don't advertise H-1B sponsorship openly. Migrate Mate filters employers by confirmed LCA filing history, so you can identify general contractors, engineering consultancies, and project management firms that have already sponsored site supervision or construction management roles. This is faster than applying broadly and asking each employer individually.
Can my H-1B cover multiple job sites if I move between projects?
Yes, but it requires additional employer compliance steps. Site Supervisor roles that involve moving between project locations fall under DOL short-term placement rules. For assignments longer than 30 to 60 workdays at a single location, your employer must post an LCA notice at that worksite. Employers managing large project portfolios should build this into their compliance process before the petition is filed.
What happens to my H-1B status if my construction project ends early?
If your employer terminates your H-1B before the petition end date, you get a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, change status, or depart. Your new employer can file an H-1B transfer petition, which lets you start working for them as soon as USCIS receives the petition, before it's approved. Don't let the 60-day window expire without filing or changing status.
Does my O*NET classification affect my H-1B petition as a Site Supervisor?
Yes. The SOC code your employer assigns determines the prevailing wage level USCIS and DOL will evaluate the petition against. O*NET classifies Site Supervisors under Construction Managers, which carries specific education and experience benchmarks. If the employer assigns a lower-level SOC code to reduce wage obligations, it can trigger a Request for Evidence about whether the role genuinely requires a bachelor's degree.
