H-1B Visa Release Engineer Jobs
Release Engineer roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Employers in software, fintech, and enterprise tech regularly file LCAs for these positions. The H-1B cap lottery runs annually, with registration typically opening in March for an October 1 start date.

Verify your role meets specialty occupation
Release Engineer duties vary widely. Check the O*NET profile for this occupation to confirm your job description aligns with the bachelor's-degree requirement USCIS uses to approve specialty occupation status. A mismatch between your actual duties and the LCA job description is a common RFE trigger.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your specific job location and SOC code before accepting an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above that level, so knowing the floor helps you negotiate without creating a compliance problem.
Target employers with CI/CD pipeline roles
Focus on companies that run dedicated release engineering teams separate from general DevOps. These employers have established H-1B filing workflows and are more likely to have in-house counsel or a retained immigration firm, which shortens the timeline from offer to petition filing.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter by Release Engineer or related SOC codes on Migrate Mate to find employers with confirmed LCA filing history for this role. That filing history signals the company has already navigated the specialty occupation classification, reducing the risk of an RFE on your petition.
Clarify cap-exempt status with your employer
If you're moving from OPT or another H-1B, confirm whether your new employer is cap-exempt. Universities and qualifying nonprofits can file outside the lottery window, letting you start immediately. Cap-exempt filings also avoid the March registration deadline entirely.
Secure premium processing before your OPT expires
If you're transitioning from OPT, ask your employer to elect premium processing so USCIS adjudicates within 15 business days. Standard processing can run several months, and you need an approved petition or a cap-gap extension in place before your EAD expires to maintain work authorization.
H-1B Visa Release Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Release Engineer role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, Release Engineer is a specialty occupation under USCIS criteria because the role typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Your employer's LCA must describe duties that genuinely require that degree level. If your job description is written too broadly, USCIS may issue an RFE challenging the specialty occupation classification, so precision in the LCA matters.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Release Engineers?
Software companies, fintech firms, cloud infrastructure providers, and large enterprise technology teams regularly sponsor H-1B visas for Release Engineers. The clearest signal is confirmed LCA filing history for this specific role and location. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with that verified DOL filing history, so you can focus your applications on companies that have already sponsored candidates in this occupation.
Can I use STEM OPT work authorization while waiting for H-1B approval?
Yes, if you're on a 24-month STEM OPT extension and your employer files your H-1B petition before your OPT expires, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify for the cap-gap extension to apply. Confirm E-Verify enrollment before your offer letter is signed.
How does the H-1B lottery affect Release Engineer job timelines?
USCIS runs H-1B registration each March, with selected petitions filed by June and an October 1 start date. If you aren't selected, you can be registered again the following year or explore cap-exempt employers. Because Release Engineer demand is high in software and tech, some candidates pursue L-1 visa or O-1 visa alternatives while waiting, though those require different employer structures or extraordinary-ability evidence.
What SOC code applies to Release Engineer H-1B petitions?
Release Engineers are most commonly classified under SOC 15-1252 (Software Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts, and Testers) or 15-1244 (Network and Computer Systems Administrators), depending on the role's actual duties. The SOC code your employer selects on the LCA determines the prevailing wage level USCIS and DOL will use, so it needs to match your day-to-day responsibilities accurately. Review the O*NET profile for each code to confirm alignment.
