Verify your SOC code before applying
PSE roles get filed under multiple SOC codes, most commonly 15-1299 or 17-2199. Check the O*NET profile for your actual duties before applying, since a mismatched code on the LCA can trigger an RFE at the petition stage.
Search LCA data filtered by occupation
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by LCA filing history for systems and consulting roles. This shows you which companies have already cleared the DOL prevailing-wage certification step for PSE positions, not just which ones are hiring.
Target E-Verify enrolled employers first
E-Verify enrollment is a practical shortcut when evaluating sponsors. Employers already enrolled have cleared at least one compliance threshold, and their HR teams are more likely to have an established H-1B filing workflow that won't stall at the offer stage.
Document client-site work arrangements upfront
PSE roles often involve travel to client sites or extended on-site deployments. If that applies to your role, the employer's LCA must list all worksite locations. Clarify this before accepting an offer to avoid amendment filings after you start.
Confirm specialty occupation with your offer letter
USCIS scrutinizes PSE petitions when the job description blurs into general IT support. Your offer letter should specify the technical systems, platforms, or architecture you'll own, making the bachelor's-degree requirement self-evident from the role description alone.
Check prevailing wage before the offer stage
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage ranges for your SOC code and worksite location. If the offer is below the applicable prevailing wage, the LCA won't certify, regardless of what the employer intends to file.
H-1B Visa Professional Services Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Professional Services Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS evaluates whether the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. PSE positions that involve system architecture, enterprise software implementation, or technical consulting tied to a specific engineering or computer science discipline consistently meet that standard. Roles framed as general IT support or account management face more scrutiny.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Professional Services Engineers?
Software vendors, enterprise technology companies, cloud infrastructure providers, and management consulting firms that embed PSEs with clients are the most active sponsors. Migrate Mate lets you search by LCA filing history filtered to relevant occupation codes, so you can see which employers have already completed DOL certification for these roles rather than guessing from job postings alone.
How does client-site travel affect my H-1B petition as a PSE?
Frequent client-site deployments require your employer to file LCA amendments whenever you work at a new location for more than 30 days within a 12-month period. This is specific to H-1B holders in mobile roles like PSE. Confirm with your employer before the offer stage how they handle multi-worksite LCA compliance, since gaps in this process expose you to status violations.
Can I switch employers if my PSE role is project-based or ends early?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you move to a new employer after your petition has been pending for 180 days, as long as the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For PSEs, that typically means staying within systems engineering or technical consulting categories. Your new employer files a new I-129, and you can start working as soon as that receipt notice is issued.
What H-1B processing timeline should I expect for a PSE position?
Standard USCIS processing runs approximately four to six months from petition filing. Premium processing cuts that to 15 business days for a decision on the I-129. Most PSE employers with active H-1B programs offer premium processing, but you should ask explicitly during the offer stage, since it's not guaranteed and the cost is typically covered by the employer under DOL rules.
