Frame your degree for specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to partnership management. A business, marketing, or communications degree strengthens your petition. If your degree is in an unrelated field, document coursework and certifications that bridge the gap explicitly.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by H-1B Labor Condition Application history for business development and partnership roles. This shows which companies have certified prevailing wages for this occupation, not just whether they sponsor in general.
Target industries with quota-exempt employers
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B isn't subject to the annual 85,000-slot lottery. Partnership roles at these organizations can start any time of year without waiting for October 1.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating offers
Run your target title and location through the OFLC Wage Search before discussing compensation. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing level for your specific metro area and experience tier.
Confirm the employer's E-Verify enrollment early
H-1B employers are required to use E-Verify to confirm work authorization. Ask during the offer stage whether the company is enrolled. Unenrolled employers must register before your I-129 petition can be filed, which can delay your start date.
Document client-facing scope in your offer letter
USCIS scrutinizes partnership and business development roles because job duties can seem generalist. Your offer letter and support letter should explicitly describe technical or specialized responsibilities, such as managing API integrations, structuring enterprise contracts, or overseeing channel partner programs.
H-1B Visa Partnership Development Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Partnership Development Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as business administration, marketing, or a related discipline. The role must routinely apply specialized knowledge. Positions with vague or generalist duties risk a Request for Evidence from USCIS, so the job description should detail technical or domain-specific responsibilities clearly.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for partnership roles?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history, so you can see which employers have certified wages for business development and partnership titles specifically. This is more reliable than relying on company career pages, which rarely disclose sponsorship policies upfront.
Can I change employers mid-H-1B if I find a better partnership role?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file an I-129 transfer petition, provided your current H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. You don't need to wait for approval of the new petition before starting, which makes mid-career moves more practical than many applicants realize.
What happens to my H-1B status if my partnership role shifts to a different business unit?
A material change in job duties, title, or worksite location typically requires an amended I-129 petition before the change takes effect. If your employer reassigns you to a substantially different partnership function or a new office location, they must file an amendment with USCIS. Failing to amend can jeopardize your status, so confirm the requirement with your employer's immigration contact before any internal transfer.
Does the O*NET classification for Partnership Development Manager affect my H-1B petition?
O*NET occupation profiles inform how USCIS and DOL assess whether a role is a specialty occupation and what prevailing wage level applies. The O*NET profile for business development and partnership management roles typically falls under a Job Zone requiring a bachelor's degree, which supports the specialty occupation argument. Your employer should reference the relevant O*NET code when preparing the LCA and petition support letter.
