H-1B Visa User Experience UX Jobs
User Experience UX roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as human-computer interaction, information architecture, or cognitive psychology. Tech, finance, and healthcare employers file H-1B petitions for UX roles regularly, and the annual 85,000-slot cap means timing your job search around the April lottery window matters.

Align your degree to the role
USCIS scrutinizes UX petitions where the degree field isn't an obvious match. A portfolio alone won't satisfy the specialty occupation requirement. Document how your degree in HCI, psychology, or a related field directly underpins the UX methods your role uses.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for UX or design roles. Employers with a DOL filing track record have already navigated the process, which means fewer delays and fewer employer-side surprises after your offer.
Verify the job title on the LCA
Your employer files an LCA listing a specific job title and wage level with DOL. Make sure the title on the LCA matches how your role is actually described internally. A mismatch between your offer letter and the LCA title can trigger an RFE during USCIS adjudication.
Check prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Run your specific job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating salary. The LCA must certify that your wage meets the prevailing wage for that occupation and geography. A below-prevailing offer forces the employer to adjust or withdraw.
Use O*NET to strengthen your specialty occupation case
The O*NET profile for UX designers documents the educational requirements and core competencies adjudicators reference. Print the relevant O*NET data and ask your employer to include it in the I-129 support letter to preempt specialty occupation RFEs.
File premium processing if your start date is tight
USCIS premium processing guarantees a decision within 15 business days. If you're starting a new UX role within a few months of the October 1 cap date, ask your employer to upgrade to premium processing to avoid gaps between your start date and approval.

Find User Experience UX JobsUser Experience UX H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a UX role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, but the petition needs to show that the specific UX position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Roles focused on user research, interaction design, or information architecture typically qualify when the employer's job description specifies a degree in HCI, cognitive psychology, computer science, or a comparable discipline. Generalist design roles with loose degree requirements face higher RFE rates.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for UX professionals most often?
Technology companies file the largest volume of H-1B LCAs for UX roles, but financial services, healthcare technology, and enterprise software firms also sponsor regularly. UX roles embedded in product teams at companies that already run large H-1B programs tend to move faster because the employer's legal and HR teams are already familiar with the filing process. You can browse employers with active UX LCA history on Migrate Mate.
Can I switch UX jobs while on an H-1B without losing my status?
Yes. Under AC21 portability, you can change employers after your H-1B has been approved and you've been in valid H-1B status for at least 180 days, provided the new role is in the same or a substantially similar occupational classification. UX roles typically fall under the same SOC codes, so portability usually applies, but your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before your first day.
What documentation should I gather before a UX employer sponsors my H-1B?
Prepare your degree transcripts and diplomas, a detailed CV showing UX-specific responsibilities rather than general design work, and any professional certifications in HCI or usability. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization showing equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree. Your employer's attorney will use these to build the specialty occupation argument in the I-129 petition.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my UX job search timeline?
USCIS opens H-1B registration in March each year for the following October 1 cap date. If you're selected in the lottery, your employer has until June 30 to file the full petition. This means UX roles that require cap-subject H-1B sponsorship typically need to be secured by February or March. Some UX employers are cap-exempt, such as universities and affiliated nonprofits, which allows filing at any time without waiting for the lottery.
