Frame your degree against the specialty occupation standard
USCIS scrutinizes Change Management roles because the degree requirement isn't always obvious. Document how your degree in organizational behavior, business, or I-O psychology directly underpins your change methodology work before any petition is filed.
Search LCA filings to target sponsoring employers
Use the OFLC Wage Search to pull Labor Condition Application records for 'Management Analysts' or 'Training and Development Managers', the SOC codes most often used for this role. Employers with active LCA filings have already cleared the DOL prevailing-wage step.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for verified H-1B sponsors
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with confirmed H-1B filing history for Change Management roles, so you're targeting companies that have navigated the petition process before rather than educating a recruiter about sponsorship from scratch.
Check E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
If you'll be on STEM OPT before transitioning to H-1B, your employer must be E-Verify enrolled. Confirm enrollment status during the offer stage, not after signing, a non-enrolled employer can't legally employ you on STEM OPT extension.
Get the prevailing wage level written into your offer
DOL sets four wage levels for each SOC code and metro area. Level I salaries at some employers won't satisfy the H-1B prevailing wage for a senior change management role. Ask HR which wage level your offer maps to before the LCA is filed.
Prepare a project portfolio that demonstrates specialty occupation
USCIS RFEs for Change Management often challenge whether the role truly requires a specific bachelor's degree. A documented portfolio showing degree-dependent methodologies, Prosci ADKAR, Kotter's model, stakeholder analysis frameworks, strengthens the employer's petition before any challenge arrives.
H-1B Visa Change Management Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Change Management Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but USCIS evaluates each petition individually. The role qualifies when the employer's job description requires a specific bachelor's degree, organizational behavior, business administration, industrial-organizational psychology, or a directly related field. Generic listings that accept any degree weaken the case. Your employer's attorney should align the job description and the LCA to a SOC code that reflects the degree-specific nature of the work before filing.
Which SOC code do employers typically use when filing an H-1B for this role?
Employers most commonly file under Management Analysts (SOC 13-1111) or Training and Development Managers (SOC 11-3131), depending on whether the role emphasizes process design or people-side change facilitation. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage USCIS and DOL apply, so it directly affects whether your offered salary satisfies the H-1B wage requirement. You can look up both codes and their wage levels using the OFLC Wage Search or O*NET.
How do I find employers who have sponsored H-1B visas for Change Management roles before?
Migrate Mate filters employers by verified H-1B filing history, so you can identify companies that have already sponsored this role rather than pitching the concept to a recruiter who has never navigated the process. The OFLC Wage Search also lets you search certified LCA records by job title and employer name, which shows active sponsoring companies in your target metro area.
Can I work as a Change Management Specialist at a client site while on H-1B?
Yes, but USCIS has specific rules for third-party placement. The petitioning employer must maintain an employer-employee relationship, control the work, and have a confirmed client assignment before filing. Consulting firms and staffing companies sponsoring H-1B workers for client-site change management engagements must document the end-client relationship and the duration of the assignment in the petition.
What happens to my H-1B if the transformation project I was hired for ends early?
Your H-1B status is tied to your employer, not the project. If the engagement ends but your employer retains you, your status continues. If your employment ends, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new employer who can file an H-1B transfer, change your status, or depart the country. Filing a transfer petition before your last day of employment preserves your work authorization during adjudication.
