You Are
You enjoy solving important problems and want to develop world-leading products. You are comfortable working in a large codebase where understanding the system is half the job and improving it is the other half. You talk to the people who will use what you build, you figure out what actually matters. Debugging energizes you because it means you get to understand something deeply enough to fix it right. At Synopsys, you will work on RedHawk-SC, a platform that helps the semiconductor industry solve power and reliability problems that directly affect whether the next generation of chips actually work.
What You'll Be Doing
- Design, develop, and own new capabilities in RedHawk-SC, a distributed big-data analytics platform used for power integrity and reliability analysis in advanced SoC designs
- Write production-quality C++ code that is efficient, maintainable, and scalable across large semiconductor datasets and complex IC architectures
- Diagnose and resolve software defects across the codebase, including performance bottlenecks, memory issues, and algorithmic inefficiencies
- Build unit, regression, and system-level tests that validate new features and ensure reliability across distributed processing environments
- Optimize tool runtime and memory usage to handle designs at 3nm and below, including FinFET, 3D-IC, and stacked-die architectures

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or Master's with 2+ years of relevant experience
- 2+ years of hands-on experience writing C++, with a strong command of the language and its performance characteristics
- Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and debugging techniques applied to complex software systems
- Working knowledge of Linux operating systems and development workflows
- Understanding of electronic design at gate level or transistor level, enough to reason about what the software is modeling
- Experience with Python is a plus, particularly for scripting, automation, or tooling
- Background in distributed processing, large-scale commercial software development, or ASIC power delivery network simulation is a plus
Who You Are
You can look at a performance problem and figure out whether it is an algorithm issue, a data structure issue, or an architecture issue, and you know which one to fix first. You write code that other engineers can read, modify, and trust six months later without needing you in the room. You ask questions when requirements are unclear and you push back when a proposed solution does not match the actual problem. You treat deadlines seriously and you know how to break down a medium-sized project into pieces that can be delivered, tested, and integrated incrementally. You are comfortable being the person others come to when they need to understand a specific part of the system or debug something tricky. You care about the end user experience, even when the end user is another engineer trying to close timing on a 5 billion transistor design.
The Team You'll Be Part Of
You will join the RedHawk-SC Research and Development team in Austin, a group focused on building state-of-the-art software for semiconductor power and reliability analysis. The team works on a purpose-built platform that handles distributed big-data analytics for advanced SoC designs, tackling challenges in electromigration, thermal effects, and power noise integrity across emerging architectures like 3D-IC, FinFET, and stacked-die. This is a team that values deep technical work, clear communication, and delivering tools that directly affect whether the most complex chips in the world can actually be manufactured.

Align your degree to your R&D specialty
USCIS scrutinizes whether your degree field directly matches the R&D discipline on the petition. A mechanical engineering degree supporting a materials R&D role is a stronger match than a general science degree for the same position. Document the connection explicitly.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating offers
R&D engineering prevailing wages vary significantly by SOC code and metro area. Pull the OFLC Wage Search figures for your specific discipline before any offer discussion so you know whether the employer's LCA wage meets the DOL threshold for your location.
Target employers with cap-exempt research affiliations
Universities, federal research labs, and nonprofit research organizations attached to higher-education institutions are cap-exempt H-1B employers. R&D engineers who join these entities can file outside the annual lottery window and start immediately upon USCIS approval.
Search Migrate Mate for verified R&D sponsors
Filter Migrate Mate by R&D engineering roles to see employers with confirmed LCA filing history in your discipline. This surfaces which companies have actively sponsored H-1B petitions for research and development positions rather than relying on employer claims alone.
Clarify IP ownership terms before signing
Many R&D engineering offer letters include IP assignment clauses that complicate later PERM or H-1B amendments if your research scope changes. Review the scope-of-work description in your offer against what the employer files in the LCA before accepting.
Request premium processing when project timelines are fixed
R&D roles often have grant-funded start dates or product-cycle deadlines. Premium processing gives you a 15-business-day USCIS adjudication target, which your employer can request on Form I-907 to protect against standard processing delays disrupting project commitments.
H-1B Visa R D Engineering: Frequently Asked Questions
Does my R&D engineering role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering discipline directly related to the research work. USCIS evaluates the job duties, not just the title. Roles involving applied research, prototype development, or experimental design in fields like electrical, chemical, or mechanical engineering consistently meet the specialty occupation standard when the employer documents the degree requirement in the LCA and petition.
How do I find R&D engineering employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate shows verified LCA filing history by role and employer, so you can identify companies that have sponsored H-1B petitions for R&D engineering positions rather than guessing based on company size or reputation. DOL LCA disclosure data is public, and filtering it by occupation code lets you see which employers consistently file for research and development roles in your engineering discipline.
Can I switch R&D employers mid-H-1B without losing my visa status?
Yes, H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new R&D employer once they file an H-1B transfer petition on your behalf, as long as your current H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. The new employer must file a new LCA and I-129 petition. If your research project or job duties change substantially, USCIS treats it as a material change requiring an amended petition.
What happens to my H-1B if my R&D project is cancelled or defunded?
If your employer terminates your position, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, change to another visa status, or depart the U.S. The grace period doesn't extend if you resign voluntarily. R&D engineers on grant-funded projects should confirm with their employer whether a grant lapse triggers a termination or a temporary bench period, since USCIS treats those situations differently.
Does the type of R&D work I do affect how USCIS evaluates my H-1B petition?
Yes. Basic research roles at universities or nonprofit labs are more straightforwardly supported under the specialty occupation standard because the academic environment implies degree-level work. Applied R&D at a private company requires the employer to document in the LCA and petition why the specific research duties require a degree in a directly related engineering field, not just a general science background. O*NET can help confirm the typical education requirements for your specific role title.
