Align your degree to your role
USCIS evaluates whether your degree field directly relates to project management. A business administration or engineering degree strengthens your case, while an unrelated degree may require a credentials evaluation showing equivalency before your employer files.
Check LCA filings by SOC code
Project Management Lead roles typically file under SOC code 11-9199 or 15-1299 depending on the industry. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify which wage level your employer is certifying at before accepting an offer.
Target employers with cap-exempt pathways
Universities, nonprofits, and government research organizations are cap-exempt, meaning they can file your H-1B petition outside the annual lottery. Program management roles at these institutions often go unfilled because candidates don't realize the lottery doesn't apply.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsors
Search Migrate Mate to filter Project Management Lead roles by employers with documented H-1B LCA filing history. That filing history confirms the employer has sponsored before, reducing the risk of offers that fall through at the petition stage.
Negotiate offer timing around the lottery window
H-1B cap registrations open each March for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer after April, your earliest possible start on a new H-1B is the following October, so push for an OPT cap-gap bridge or a delayed start clause in writing.
Document cross-functional authority in your offer letter
USCIS scrutinizes Project Management Lead petitions for evidence of genuine specialty occupation status. Your offer letter should specify degree requirements for the role and describe supervisory or cross-functional decision-making responsibilities that go beyond general coordination.
H-1B Visa Project Management Lead: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Management Lead role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, if the employer's job description requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as business administration, engineering, or computer science. Generic project coordination roles that accept any degree may not qualify. The stronger your offer letter ties the responsibilities to a specific degree field, the cleaner the USCIS adjudication.
Which SOC code do employers typically use when filing an LCA for this role?
Employers most commonly file under SOC 11-9199 (Managers, All Other) or, for tech-focused programs, 15-1299 (Computer Occupations, All Other). The SOC code determines the prevailing wage level DOL certifies. You can cross-check the expected wage level for your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before your employer submits the LCA.
How do I find employers that have sponsored H-1B visas for Project Management Lead roles?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified H-1B LCA filing history, so you can identify employers who have sponsored this role before rather than relying on a company's self-reported claims. Consistent filing history across multiple years is the clearest signal that an employer's HR and legal teams are equipped to complete the sponsorship process.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Project Management Lead employer mid-year?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed, without waiting for approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've been in valid status. Your new employer still needs to file a new LCA and I-129 petition covering the specific lead role and location.
What happens to my H-1B if my Project Management Lead role is reclassified or my project ends?
If your employer terminates you or your role changes substantially, you enter a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, change status, or depart. A role reclassification that changes your SOC code or removes the degree requirement may require an amended petition from your employer before the change takes effect, or USCIS may treat it as an unauthorized material change.
