Align your degree to HCM specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to the HCM role. A business administration or industrial-organizational psychology degree supports most positions. If your degree is in an adjacent field, document how your coursework maps to workforce planning or HRIS functions.
Target employers running large HRIS implementations
Companies mid-implementation on SAP SuccessFactors, Workday, or Oracle HCM file H-1B petitions more consistently for HCM roles. Look for job postings that list these platforms as requirements rather than preferences.
Search LCA filings by HCM occupation codes
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by DOL Labor Condition Application filings under HCM-related SOC codes. This shows which companies have active H-1B filing history for your specific role type, not just general sponsorship willingness.
Confirm your role qualifies before accepting an offer
HCM generalist roles sometimes fail the specialty occupation test if the employer can't show the position normally requires a specific degree. Before signing, verify the job description ties responsibilities to a defined academic discipline, not just broad business experience.
Request premium processing when timelines are tight
USCIS offers premium processing on Form I-129 for a faster adjudication window. If your start date falls close to the October 1 cap-subject effective date, ask your employer to file with premium processing to reduce adjudication uncertainty.
Check prevailing wage level before negotiating salary
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your HCM role and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage tiers before you negotiate, so your offer doesn't create a compliance gap.

Find Human Capital Management JobsHuman Capital Management H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Human Capital Management role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific related field such as human resources management, organizational behavior, business administration, or industrial-organizational psychology. Generalist HCM titles can face RFEs if the employer's job description accepts any business degree, so the role description should tie specific duties to a defined academic discipline.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for HCM professionals?
Enterprise technology companies, large financial institutions, hospital systems, and consulting firms with HR transformation practices are consistent H-1B sponsors for HCM roles. You can search verified H-1B filing history by employer and occupation code on Migrate Mate to identify companies with active LCA filings specifically for HCM and HR-related positions.
How does the H-1B lottery affect HCM job seekers?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions enter an annual lottery with registration typically opening in March for an October 1 start date. HCM professionals working for universities, nonprofit research institutions, or certain government-affiliated organizations may qualify for cap-exempt status, allowing their employer to file outside the lottery window without waiting for selection.
Can HCM professionals transfer their H-1B to a new employer?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as that employer files a new I-129 petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. The new petition must still satisfy specialty occupation requirements for the specific HCM role.
What SOC code is typically used for H-1B filings in Human Capital Management?
Most HCM roles file under SOC 11-3121 (Human Resources Managers) or 13-1071 (Human Resources Specialists), depending on whether the position is managerial or individual contributor. The O*NET profile for each code outlines the degree and knowledge requirements that support the specialty occupation argument in the LCA and I-129 petition.
