Frame your portfolio around measurable outcomes
USCIS scrutinizes whether PR roles genuinely require a specialized degree. Document campaigns with quantifiable results tied to your communications training to strengthen the specialty occupation argument in your employer's petition.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm which PR employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for your SOC code. Migrate Mate surfaces this LCA data by employer so you can filter to companies that have sponsored roles like yours before.
Verify your role's prevailing wage tier before negotiating
PR Specialist wages span four DOL wage levels. Pull the prevailing wage for your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer, so your salary clears the LCA-certified minimum your employer must attest to.
Ask about cap-exempt status at nonprofits and universities
PR roles at qualifying nonprofits, universities, and research institutions are cap-exempt, meaning your employer can file outside the April lottery window. These organizations hire PR professionals and can sponsor year-round without lottery risk.
Confirm your job description references your specific degree field
A vague posting saying 'bachelor's degree required' can trigger an RFE. Before signing an offer, review the job description with your employer to ensure it explicitly ties the role to a communications, PR, or journalism degree program.
Use the O*NET profile to support specialty occupation documentation
The O*NET occupation profile for Public Relations Specialists lists the degree requirements and knowledge domains USCIS references during adjudication. Your employer's attorney will reference it in the petition, so understand what it says about your role.
H-1B Visa Public Relations Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Public Relations Specialist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific related field such as communications, public relations, journalism, or marketing. Generalist roles that accept any bachelor's degree are more likely to draw an RFE. The job description needs to establish a direct connection between the degree field and the duties performed.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for PR Specialists?
Large technology companies, global PR agencies, financial services firms, and multinational corporations with dedicated communications departments sponsor H-1B PR roles regularly. Migrate Mate lets you filter employers by verified LCA filing history for PR and communications roles, so you can focus your applications on companies that have already sponsored this type of position.
Can a PR Specialist job offer come from a small agency and still qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, employer size doesn't determine H-1B eligibility. Small agencies can sponsor H-1B petitions as long as they meet the LCA requirements, pay the prevailing wage for your metro area, and can demonstrate a legitimate employer-employee relationship. The specialty occupation requirement applies regardless of company size.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer loses a major client and my role changes significantly?
A material change in job duties can require an amended H-1B petition. If your role shifts from the specialty occupation described in the original LCA, your employer should file an amended I-129 with USCIS. Working in a materially different capacity without an amended petition puts your status at risk during any future immigration filing or reentry.
How do I know if a PR job posting is at a company that has sponsored H-1B visas before?
DOL LCA disclosure data shows which employers have filed Labor Condition Applications, which is required before any H-1B petition can be filed. Checking this data by employer name and SOC code tells you whether a company has a track record of sponsoring roles in your occupation category before you invest time in the application process.
