Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Security Manager
Map your degree to SOC codes
Security Manager roles map to multiple SOC codes, and the one your employer selects directly affects your prevailing wage tier. Pull the O*NET occupation profile to confirm which code matches your actual duties before your employer files the LCA.
Target employers with established security programs
Large financial institutions, defense contractors, and healthcare systems with dedicated security departments sponsor H-1B roles more reliably than generalist firms. These employers already have immigration counsel on retainer and understand the specialty occupation requirement for security leadership roles.
Use Migrate Mate to filter by LCA history
Pull up Security Manager roles on Migrate Mate and filter by verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing history. This shows you which employers have actually sponsored the role before, not just employers who mention visa sponsorship in job postings.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating salary
Run your target location and SOC code through the OFLC Wage Search before any offer conversation. Employers are legally bound to pay at least the prevailing wage, so knowing Level II and Level III thresholds for your metro area prevents low-ball offers that could also violate LCA requirements.
Get CISSP or CISM before the lottery window
USCIS adjudicators scrutinize Security Manager petitions more heavily when the applicant's degree is in a general field like business or IT. Holding an active CISSP or CISM certification before your employer files Form I-129 strengthens the specialty occupation argument significantly.
Clarify clearance requirements before H-1B filing
Roles requiring a U.S. security clearance can't be sponsored for foreign nationals, but many Security Manager positions list clearance as preferred, not required. Confirm in writing which duties require cleared access so your employer can accurately describe the position in the LCA.
H-1B Visa Security Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Security Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, Security Manager qualifies when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as information security, cybersecurity, or computer science. USCIS will scrutinize the job description closely, so your employer's LCA and I-129 petition must show that a specific degree is a standard requirement for the role, not just a preference.
How do I find employers who have actually sponsored Security Manager H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Security Manager roles by verified DOL LCA filing history, so you can see which employers have sponsored the role before rather than relying on job posting language. This matters because many companies list visa sponsorship as available but have no track record filing for security leadership positions specifically.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if my Security Manager role changes significantly?
You can transfer your H-1B to a new employer under portability rules once your I-140 has been approved for 180 days, but if the new role's duties differ materially from the approved petition, your new employer must file an amended or new I-129. For Security Manager transitions, changes in department scope, reporting structure, or worksite location often trigger an amendment requirement.
Does requiring a security clearance affect my H-1B sponsorship eligibility for Security Manager jobs?
Positions requiring a U.S. government security clearance are generally not sponsorable for H-1B workers because foreign nationals aren't eligible for most clearance levels. Many Security Manager roles list clearance as preferred rather than required, so clarify the actual access requirements with the employer before assuming you're ineligible. Roles focused on corporate or physical security without government-classified information are typically sponsorable.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm laid off from my Security Manager position?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new H-1B sponsor, change to another visa status, or depart the U.S. During that window, your employer isn't required to pay your salary once the employment relationship ends. Filing a transfer petition before the grace period expires maintains your status while the new petition is pending.
