Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Stage Manager
Document your degree's direct relevance
USCIS scrutinizes Stage Manager petitions closely because the role spans creative and technical disciplines. Gather transcripts, course descriptions, and any theatre management coursework that ties your specific degree directly to stage management duties, not just performing arts broadly.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Broadway production companies, regional theatres, and university performing arts centers are the employer types most likely to have filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications for Stage Manager roles. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified H-1B filing history in this occupation.
Verify the specialty occupation framing upfront
Ask any prospective employer whether their job description explicitly requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field, not just 'equivalent experience.' Employers who list experience as a degree substitute weaken the specialty occupation argument and increase the risk of a Request for Evidence.
Check prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Your employer must certify your wage meets the DOL prevailing wage for Stage Manager in your specific metro area. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the correct SOC code before your offer letter is finalized so you're not negotiating blind after the LCA is filed.
Understand the cap-subject timeline for theatre hiring
Most theatre employers are cap-subject, meaning your H-1B start date is tied to the October 1 fiscal year. If you're hired in spring, you may need to bridge on OPT or another status for months. Confirm your employer understands this timeline before signing.
Build a portfolio that proves degree necessity
USCIS may issue an RFE arguing a Stage Manager role doesn't require a specific degree. Compile contracts, production programs, and union agreements showing the role's technical complexity, budget responsibility, and coordination scope that a performing arts degree directly prepares you for.

Find Stage Manager JobsStage Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Stage Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but approval isn't automatic. USCIS requires the position to normally require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Stage Manager petitions are more likely to succeed when the employer's job description mandates a degree in theatre, stage management, or a closely related discipline and when the employer documents why that degree is necessary for the role's specific duties.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Stage Managers?
Broadway production companies, regional theatres, opera companies, university performing arts departments, and large live events producers are the most common H-1B sponsors for Stage Manager roles. University employers are often cap-exempt, meaning they can file outside the annual lottery window. You can browse employers with verified H-1B filing history for this occupation on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B lottery affect Stage Manager job seekers?
Most theatre and live events employers are cap-subject, so your petition enters the annual H-1B lottery with an October 1 start date. USCIS selects registrations by random draw, and selection isn't guaranteed. If you're currently on F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT expiration date relative to the October 1 start date so your employer can plan for any authorization gap.
What documentation strengthens an H-1B petition for a Stage Manager?
The strongest petitions include a detailed job duties letter from the employer explaining why a specific degree is required, your transcripts showing relevant coursework in theatre or stage management, union agreements or production contracts demonstrating the role's technical scope, and an expert opinion letter from an academic or industry professional if the degree-to-role connection isn't immediately obvious to an adjudicating officer.
Can a Stage Manager change employers on H-1B status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer once they file an H-1B transfer petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval. The new employer must file before your current H-1B status expires and the role must still qualify as a specialty occupation. The O*NET profile for Stage Manager can help employers build the specialty occupation argument in the new petition.
