Map your degree to the TPM role
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation for project management roles because the required degree field isn't always obvious. Document how your degree in computer science, engineering, or information systems directly supports the technical scope of your specific position, not project management generically.
Verify prevailing wages before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV prevailing wage for SOC code 15-1299 or 11-3021 in your target metro. Your offered salary must meet or exceed the certified level, so know the floor before your first offer conversation.
Target employers with cap-exempt access
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated organizations can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap. Technical Project Manager roles exist at these organizations, and a cap-exempt filing means no lottery risk and year-round submission timing.
Search LCA filings by occupation code on Migrate Mate
Filter by SOC code to see which employers have active LCA filings for project management roles. This surfaces companies with a proven H-1B filing history for your specific occupation, not just general sponsorship willingness.
Prepare a specialty occupation evidence packet
Gather job postings from comparable TPM roles at similar companies that require a specific technical degree. USCIS accepts industry-wide degree requirements as evidence, so a pattern of postings requiring computer science or engineering strengthens your petition against an RFE.
Clarify the I-129 timeline with your employer early
H-1B petitions for cap-subject roles must be filed for an October 1 start date, with registration opening in March. If you're changing employers, the new I-129 can be filed immediately under AC21 portability once your prior petition has been pending for 180 days.

Find Technical Project Manager JobsTechnical Project Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Project Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
It can, but USCIS applies close scrutiny because project management is sometimes treated as a generalist function. The key is demonstrating that your specific role requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related technical field, such as computer science, engineering, or information systems, not just any degree. Job duties tied to technical architecture, systems integration, or software delivery strengthen the case significantly.
Which employers regularly sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Project Managers?
Technology companies, defense contractors, financial services firms, and large consulting organizations with software delivery practices are the most consistent sponsors for this role. You can identify employers with active LCA filings for project management occupation codes by searching on Migrate Mate, which filters job listings by verified DOL filing history so you're only seeing employers who have already committed to sponsorship.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I'm already a Technical Project Manager on H-1B status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules codified in AC21, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, without waiting for approval, provided your current petition was approved and you've maintained valid status. The new employer must file a new LCA at the prevailing wage for your role and location before submitting the transfer petition to USCIS.
What prevailing wage level applies to Technical Project Manager H-1B filings?
It depends on your job duties and the employer's internal level structure. USCIS and DOL use four wage levels tied to experience, supervision, and complexity. Entry-level TPM roles typically map to Level I or II, while senior or program-level roles map to Level III or IV. Use the OFLC Wage Search with the relevant SOC code for your metro area to confirm the certified wage floor before accepting an offer.
Does the H-1B cap affect Technical Project Manager roles, and is there any way around it?
Cap-subject TPM roles at for-profit companies are subject to the 65,000 H-1B cap plus the 20,000 master's cap exemption, with selection by lottery each March. Cap-exempt pathways exist if you work for a qualifying university, nonprofit research organization, or government research institution. H-1B transfers between employers after initial selection don't require re-entering the lottery, which is one reason experienced TPMs on H-1B status are attractive candidates for sponsoring employers.
