Align your credentials to SOC codes
Test Engineer roles map to multiple Standard Occupational Classification codes, and the one your employer selects drives prevailing wage requirements. Pull the O*NET profile for your target role to verify which degree fields and task descriptions match your background before applications go out.
Check prevailing wages before negotiating
Your offer salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for the role and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your specific SOC code and metro area so you enter salary negotiations knowing the floor your employer is legally required to clear.
Target employers with active LCA filing histories
Not every company that posts Test Engineer roles has filed a Labor Condition Application for Chilean nationals. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified H-1B1 visa sponsorship activity, so you focus your outreach on companies that have already navigated the process.
Confirm your degree field maps to the role
H-1B1 requires specialty occupation status, meaning your bachelor's degree must be in a field directly related to Test Engineering. A degree in electrical engineering or computer science typically qualifies; a general business degree does not, even with years of QA experience.
Prepare your LCA documentation before the offer stage
Once you have an offer, your employer files the LCA with DOL before submitting your consular application. Ask hiring managers early whether their HR or legal team has handled H-1B1 Chile filings specifically, since the consular route differs from standard H-1B USCIS petitions.
Bring role-specific evidence to your consular interview
Consular officers assess specialty occupation on the spot, so bring your job description, degree transcripts, and any professional certifications relevant to test engineering. Documentation showing software testing methodologies or hardware validation experience strengthens the specialty occupation argument directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Test Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation under H-1B1 Chile?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as electrical engineering, computer science, or software engineering. Generic QA roles that accept any bachelor's degree may face scrutiny, so your employer's job description should specify the required technical discipline to satisfy the specialty occupation standard.
How is the H-1B1 Chile process different from H-1B for Test Engineers?
The H-1B1 Chile visa skips the USCIS lottery entirely and is processed at the U.S. consulate in Chile after your employer files a certified LCA with DOL. The annual cap is 1,400 visas and historically goes unfilled, so Chilean Test Engineers with a qualifying offer face far less uncertainty than H-1B applicants competing in a randomized selection.
How do I find Test Engineer employers that sponsor H-1B1 Chile visas?
Migrate Mate lets you search verified job listings filtered specifically for H-1B1 Chile sponsorship, so you're not guessing which employers will engage. Targeting companies with prior LCA filing history for Chilean nationals saves significant time compared to applying broadly and raising the sponsorship question late in the process.
What documents should I prepare for the H-1B1 Chile consular interview as a Test Engineer?
Bring your certified LCA, the employer's detailed job description, official degree transcripts, and any professional certifications in testing frameworks or hardware validation. Because the consular officer makes the specialty occupation determination at the interview, documentation that ties your specific degree field to the technical requirements of the Test Engineer role is critical.
Can I switch employers or roles while on an H-1B1 Chile visa?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new H-1B1 Chile visa stamp before the job change takes effect, since portability provisions that apply to H-1B status don't extend to H-1B1. Confirm the new role still qualifies as a specialty occupation before beginning the process.
