Align your degree to the QA role
Consular officers confirm your degree field directly supports the QA function. A computer science or software engineering degree maps cleanly, but an unrelated major needs supporting coursework or credentials showing technical equivalency before you apply.
Search verified H-1B1 filers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter QA Engineer roles by employers with documented H-1B1 Singapore filing history. This cuts the research time spent on companies that will ask you to educate their HR team from scratch.
Target companies already running structured QA teams
Employers with dedicated QA departments understand specialty occupation framing for testing roles. Mid-size software firms and regulated industries like fintech and medtech regularly file H-1B1 visa petitions for QA engineers rather than treating it as a one-off exception.
Verify the prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with DOL certifying your wage meets the prevailing rate for your location and job zone. Check the OFLC Wage Search using your specific SOC code before you enter salary discussions so you know the floor.
Get your offer letter to reflect specialty occupation language
The consular officer needs to see that the role requires a degree in a specific field, not just any bachelor's degree. Ask your employer to describe QA responsibilities in terms of systems analysis, software validation, or test architecture rather than generic testing duties.
Plan your consulate appointment around LCA certification timing
Your employer's LCA must be DOL-certified before you book your consulate interview. Certification typically takes seven business days, so coordinate the appointment scheduling to avoid a gap that delays your start date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does QA Engineer work qualify as a specialty occupation under the H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes. QA Engineer roles qualify when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, software engineering, or information systems. The consular officer evaluates the job description, not just the title, so your employer's LCA and offer letter need to reflect the technical degree requirement clearly.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa differ from the H-1B for a QA Engineer?
The H-1B1 visa skips the lottery entirely and is processed at the U.S. consulate in Singapore rather than through USCIS. The annual cap is 5,400 visas for Singaporeans, and it has never come close to filling. The tradeoff is that H-1B1 doesn't support dual intent, meaning it's harder to pursue a green card concurrently, and the status is granted in one-year increments rather than three.
How do I find QA Engineer jobs where employers already know how to file H-1B1 sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you filter QA Engineer roles by employers with verified H-1B1 Singapore filing history, so you're not starting the conversation cold. Focusing on companies that have filed before saves significant time because their HR and legal teams are already familiar with the LCA process and consulate requirements.
What happens to my H-1B1 status if my QA Engineer role changes significantly at the same employer?
A material change in job duties, location, or employer can require a new LCA filing and may affect your H-1B1 visa status. If your role shifts from manual testing to a substantially different function like security engineering or product management, your employer should file an amended petition before the change takes effect rather than after.
Can I use O*NET to confirm my QA Engineer role supports an H-1B1 petition?
O*NET classifies Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers under SOC code 15-1253, which sits in Job Zone 4 and requires a bachelor's degree. Sharing the O*NET occupation profile with your employer's immigration counsel helps confirm the specialty occupation argument and gives the LCA preparer the correct SOC code for the prevailing wage lookup.
