Translate your credentials for U.S. specialty occupation standards
Singapore polytechnic diplomas don't automatically satisfy the H-1B1 visa bachelor's degree requirement. Confirm your NUS or NTU degree maps to a directly related U.S. field using your O*NET occupation profile before targeting roles.
Target employers with established LCA filing infrastructure
Use Migrate Mate to identify companies with active DOL Labor Condition Application history for Technical Director roles, so you're approaching employers who already understand the H-1B1 filing process rather than educating them from scratch.
Verify your job title qualifies as a specialty occupation
Technical Director spans creative, engineering, and technology contexts. The DOL evaluates the specific duties, not just the title. Confirm your role requires a degree in a directly related discipline, not general management or leadership skills alone.
Negotiate the LCA filing timeline into your offer stage
The employer must file and receive DOL certification of the LCA before your consulate appointment. Build at least 10 business days for LCA processing into your start date negotiation so certification doesn't delay your visa stamp.
Check prevailing wage requirements before accepting an offer
Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for your location and job category. Run your role through the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the offer meets the DOL threshold before signing, not after.
Prepare for consular nonimmigrant intent scrutiny at your interview
H-1B1 does not permit dual intent, meaning consular officers assess whether you intend to remain temporarily. Have clear documentation of Singapore ties and a defined employment period to address intent questions directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Director role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Singapore purposes?
It depends on the specific duties, not the title. A Technical Director overseeing engineering systems, software architecture, or broadcast technology typically qualifies because the role requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related technical field. A Technical Director in a general creative or production management capacity may face more scrutiny if USCIS determines the position doesn't require a specific degree discipline.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa compare to the H-1B for Technical Director roles?
The H-1B1 has no lottery, a dedicated 5,400-visa annual allocation for Singaporeans that rarely fills, and processes entirely at the consulate rather than through USCIS petition. The tradeoff is that H-1B1 doesn't allow dual intent, so you can't concurrently pursue a green card while on H-1B1 status the way you can on H-1B. For Singaporeans with a qualifying offer, H-1B1 is typically faster to obtain.
How do I find Technical Director jobs where employers already understand H-1B1 Singapore sponsorship?
Search Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing history specific to H-1B1 Singapore. This surfaces companies that have already navigated the process, so conversations about sponsorship start from a position of employer familiarity rather than requiring you to explain the visa category from scratch.
Can my employer file the LCA for a Technical Director role before I have a confirmed start date?
Yes. The DOL allows LCA filing with a projected employment start date, and employers can file before a final start date is confirmed. The certified LCA is valid for up to three years. Your employer should file as soon as the offer is extended to avoid certification delays pushing back your consulate appointment and actual start date.
Does H-1B1 Singapore cover Technical Director roles at startup companies or only large enterprises?
Employer size isn't a statutory eligibility factor for H-1B1. What matters is that the employer can demonstrate the role is a genuine specialty occupation and that they'll meet the prevailing wage obligation set by DOL. Startups can sponsor H-1B1 visas, but they face closer scrutiny on financial viability and whether a Technical Director role at an early-stage company genuinely requires the level of specialization H-1B1 demands.
