Hse Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hse manager in California?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in occupational health, environmental science, or engineering, followed by field experience in a California-regulated industry such as construction, manufacturing, or oil and gas. California operates under Cal/OSHA, administered by the Department of Industrial Relations, which sets the regulatory framework employers expect candidates to know well. Earning the Certified Safety Professional credential demonstrates competency and is a consistent differentiator in California hiring.
How much do hse managers make in California?
Hse managers in California earn a median of about $102,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $59,760 for the lowest 10% to over $161,300 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire hse managers in California?
Employers hiring hse managers in California right now include Air Liquide, Fluor, and Hitachi Global Air Power Us, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large construction contractors, life sciences companies, and industrial manufacturers means demand is spread across multiple sectors rather than driven by a single industry.
Which California cities have the most hse manager jobs?
Exeter, Fremont, and Moreno Valley have the most hse manager openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its dense construction activity and large industrial base, the Bay Area draws demand from life sciences and technology campuses with environmental compliance needs, and Sacramento sees consistent volume from state agency contractors and regional infrastructure projects.
Are there remote hse manager jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. The role is inherently site-based, requiring physical presence for inspections, incident response, and regulatory compliance audits. About 0% of hse manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are almost always in corporate safety program management or environmental compliance roles rather than field-facing positions.
How can I get hired as a hse manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a safety coordinator or environmental health and safety technician role, which large California employers in construction and manufacturing use as feeder positions. Companies such as Bechtel and major general contractors operating in California run structured onboarding programs that develop coordinators into managers over time. Completing an associate-level safety certification and gaining any field exposure through internships with California industrial employers gives candidates a measurable edge at the application stage.
Where can I find and apply to hse manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to hse manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries and experience levels. Search the listings to find roles that match your background, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
