Internal Audit Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a internal audit manager in California?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field followed by several years of staff and senior audit experience, typically within a public accounting firm or a corporate internal audit function. California does not require a state-issued license specific to internal auditing, but employers strongly expect a CPA licensed through the California Board of Accountancy, a CIA from the IIA, or a CISA from ISACA. Promotion to manager generally follows demonstrated leadership on audit engagements.
How much do internal audit managers make in California?
Internal audit managers in California earn a median of about $97,050 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,770 for the lowest 10% to over $160,520 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire internal audit managers in California?
Employers hiring internal audit managers in California right now include DoorDash, Coinbase, and Intuit, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large financial institutions, global technology companies, and major health systems creates steady demand for this role across multiple industries statewide.
Which California cities have the most internal audit manager jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Garden Grove have the most internal audit manager openings in California. The distribution follows where corporate headquarters and regulated industries cluster: San Francisco and San Jose draw heavily from fintech, banking, and technology firms, while Los Angeles is anchored by entertainment conglomerates, healthcare systems, and the regional headquarters of major national companies.
Are there remote internal audit manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many management roles, since internal audit work is heavily documentation-based and review-driven. About 67% of internal audit manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the desk-oriented nature of planning, report writing, and committee presentations. The portions of the role most suited to remote work are risk assessment planning, report drafting, and staff supervision, while fieldwork and stakeholder interviews often require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a internal audit manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is landing a staff or senior internal auditor role first, then building toward management. Large California employers such as Kaiser Permanente, Bank of America, and major public accounting firms with California offices hire audit associates and seniors who can progress internally. A CPA or CIA credential gives candidates a concrete edge during that climb. Lateral moves from external audit, risk advisory, or compliance analyst positions are common ways to enter internal audit in California without direct experience at the manager level.
Where can I find and apply to internal audit manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to internal audit manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers actively hiring. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to each one.
